That’s what grandmas do.

Mike is at that age when he realizes his grandparents are people who were once upon a time people his age and have lived a lifetime he is yet to experience.

That would be me!

That pretty much sums it up…..

Friend1: “Who’s that?”

Friend2: “My dad’s mom.”

Friend1: “Don’t you mean your grandmother?”

Friend2: “…………….. We need to talk …………….”

Whenever I give the g-kids money its in dollar origami form. One of my favorites is the heart that will hold a quarter. Then I use a quarter with their birthyear so at Christmas they have to figure out which package is theirs by the date on the quarter. Other times its up to them how soon they want to unfold and spend their cash. One of the grand sons instantly unfolds and counts it all up, the granddaughter will admire and display it on the dresser. Either way, its a great way to score cool points with the g-kids!

Yes, Mike, she’s “fun” and “cool”, but it’s only because you don’t live with her full-time.

Grandma remembers her college days living in the commune.

Why not call her his “Grandma”?

I can imagine Weed’s deadpan comment in the last panel very well.

Wow – 75 years old. Many of us are thinking, “she’s old enough to be our sister.”

Ah yes, in the world of the typical college student a person’s cool factor is directly proportional to the monetary amount they provide.

Once again we see the effect of MIchael not having seen his grandmother in 6 years. When Weed asks who she is, Michael says, “My dad’s mom” and not “My grandmother”. Also he seems amazed to have discovered what Gramma Carrie is like. While Weed attributes that to money for the punchline, it is also easily attributable to the long gap since he got to spend any real time with her. How do you consider a woman who did not come to your high school graduation that you have not seen since middle school? Everything about her would be new to Michael. This comic strip very excellently summarizes all that in 4 short panels. Also Michael squeezes in some 70s slang with “with-it”. Excellently done.

Yes… A lot of good memories about my Grandma’s too…

Sadly a lot of grandkids only come around when they want something financial.

Why bother bringing Mike back into the story for such a short time? He did nothing of note beyond the reveal that a secondary character will marry a tertiary character at some indeterminate point in the future.
