It would have been interesting if the format of this strip changed to Calvin becoming a “wild child”, living with his “pet” among the beauty of raw nature. That is, if he can live without TV for so long!!
Some of you will be pleased to read that I probably won’t make any comments tomorrow. This is because I am going on a daycation with some friends and probably won’t have time to make any comments. Some of you will miss me but others will be pleased. I am genuinely sorry if anyone has been upset by my assurances that this story has a happy ending. There are some genuinely sad moments such as today’s comment from Calvin but it does end happily as many readers will remember.
I thought so too, but after an hour or so of riding my bike away from home I turned around and headed back. It stuck me that I was truly unprepared to be on my own at the age of 7.
Spoiler alert: It can not be long before they go back for if you look real close neither of them are carrying the sandwiches…or hobbes ate them all which will cause a fight which will make them forget why they left in the first place. One of which is sure to happen. Its Calvin we are talking about.
A little off-topic, but has something happened to “BE THIS GUY”? Usually, his comment is the first one you see here, but for the past couple of days, he’s nowhere to be found.
Mom doesn’t even know whether or not they were there when the car rolled into the ditch. She didn’t know where he was at the time and hasn’t seen him since. Based on what she actually knows about what happened, as opposed to what she will suspect, she would blame herself for not putting the car in park or setting the parking brake. If Calvin plays it cool, he can get away scot-free.
It’s a shame there’s no animated adaptation of this comic but then again if Bill Watterson tried to back then the beautiful background art would have been cheapened.

It would have been cool if Calvin HAD stayed away and gone on a “runaway” adventure

Keep going, Calvin. You might be able to get a job with a carnival, or as crew on a tramp steamer if you can reach the coast.

You can run, but you can’t hide, Calvin! By now your face is all over the news and on every milk carton!

Keep running, Cal. The guilt will chase you until you think of something more interesting.

Well Calvin, I have a nice cave you can use. Cheap for runaways and tigers.

Indeed she has… but the outcome will not be what Calvin thinks.

You know, I just love how much Bill Watterson puts into both the story and the artwork of a story arc, and this strip is the perfect example of it.

I wonder if this was the longest story arc run. I’ve been away for a week and it’s still not done!

His mom will be thinking, great, the little sh** wrecked the car, now he’s lost.

Watterson could really draw a great pastoral scene
