Letâs assume that Scardol really had such a bad memory he had to write down where he buried his treasure for fear heâd forget.
Why write it down in a childrenâs book? Wouldnât be be afraid heâd forget what book it was, if his memory was that bad? Wouldnât it be easier to write the directions out on a piece of paper and keep it in your wallet?
And why did he tell anyone else the directions to the treasure were in the book? Wouldnât he be worried someone who take the book and dig up the loot? And he must have told a fair number of people for the word to get to Croppie. Perhaps his memory was so bad he printed up a couple thousand copies of, âHey, directions for my (Scardol) buried treasure were written in my copy of Galen the Good. Oh, and the treasure is from robbing banks.â to spread around?
Are those clues or directions? âStand between the lions and look at the park across the streetâ is not terribly cryptic⌠Unless you donât know the city where he lived. Or your memory is really, really, really bad.
Bryant Park is behind the library, not across the street. The lending library is across the street from the main branch, which is reference only. (By the way, the names of the lions are Patience and Fortitude.)
Ahh, the double-edged sword of the treasure huntâŚ. The mystery, the intrigueâŚ. the ENDLESS WAITINGâŚ. If there are more than 3 clues, this little adventure can stretch out over several days⌠or weeks⌠UGH
1-CLEANCUT: Are you sure we shouldnât be at the lion cage at the zoo? CROPPIE: WellâŚ
2-âŚThe next clue IS about squirrels⌠CLEANCUT: I donât think zoos keep squirrels BUT does the Tracyville Facility For The Sanity Challenged have lions out front? Maybe thatâsâŚ
3-CROPPIE: WEâLL wind up there if we keep second guessing. Letâs stick to our guns here. BOWLING LEAGUE: I didnât bring mine. CROPPIE:And I ask myself again â WHY DID I BRING THESE TWO??? OH! IN CASE WE HAVE TO DIG IT UP! Did you put the shovels in the trunk? CLEANCUT: Huh? BOWLING: What for?
Thatâs he good thing bout writing. You can spend an hour doing research on locations or other details. In one of he early Red Ace neo-pulps, I discovered there was a Chinese drug lord nicknamed âBig Earsâ in he post WWI period, so how could I resist writing him into the series as a recurring character?
Something just occurred to me concerning BlowtopâŚ.how does he earn his keep? Itâs not like wanton criminals and bank robbers pay into Social Security or have a pension program. Might be interesting to investigate where he gets his money.

Good morningâ˘, everybody!
Yup, it does look like the 5th Avenue New York City library, except that the one in NYC has park behind it, rather than across the street.

Looks like she found a smart henchman. Weâll see if heâs smart enough not to double-cross Croptop.

The cast for todayâs âDick Tracyâ comic was unable to attend. The characters will be portrayed by the assistant director and the boom operator.

Lots of exposition and another shout out to an extremely obscure comic, but little plot movement or action.

Hopefully, Croptop changed clothes to dress up like a lady. At least she would not be recognized right away.
