This is a common theme for this comic strip on Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, where the ideal way for the parent to celebrate is to have time alone and not spend time with their children. My own opinion is that these days are to be celebrated with the children as they express their appreciation for their fathers or mothers.
With Mike and Elizabeth in the house and reasonably old, I think Father’s Day should mainly be about them celebrating their father. I am not sure why this responsibility has turned into John trying to appease April’s odd sensibilities.
I think the park, pizza, and a movie sounds like a great idea. My own father never thought that way so I made a big effort to do that stuff with my kids when they were young. Glad I did.
Father’s Day, Birthday, etc. I always have to go along with the program because everyone else wants to do something. I appreciate that they want to show support. But it’s a little draining.
Relax Dad. You don’t have to wash the car today. Your son will go out and wash the car for you! And while I’m out there, I will mow the lawn and fix whatever you wanted to fix in the workshop! After all, it is FATHER’S DAY!
I think there is a value to doing something special – together – on Father’s Day. Day you get to do you is birthday – but day celebrating relationship of Father and child/ren is Father’s Day.
My son and grandson came to visit for almost two weeks (one-way trip=800+ miles). This morning he made biscuits & gravy for breakfast. Before he leaves he needs to borrow a large amount of money. (sigh) Can’t win ‘em all…Then again, he fixed the doggie door for me. I just had cataract surgery and shouldn’t do the bending down necessary for the repair.
And sometimes the best way to spend it is by being a Father. That can take very many tacks, but sharing it with a young child in a way that is enjoyable to both of you is one of the best. My ‘kids’ are long since grown and looking back I wish I’d taken that track more often.
I remember these days. Fathers day was better than Mothers day though. Our daughters insisted going to Waffle House on Mother’s day because they gave a carnation to all mother’s on that day. Didn’t matter that our favorite diner was only half a mile closer. They didn’t give away carnations and that was IMPORTANT to our 4 year old.
Yeah, my boys wanted me to do what I wanted to do, as long as it was in the swimming pool. All day long. Oh well, they were all home and not fighting. Win – win, right?

Looking forward to reading which way How’s criticism will go. Attack Dad? Attack April? Both?

Sleep in early would be my answer; especially on a Sunday. Haven’t done that since the COVID lockdown.

That’s what thoughtful fathers do on Father’s Day.

Prowling through hardware stores is great fun. Never know what you might find. As they say, “You can’t have too many screwdrivers.”

I’d enjoy another afternoon with the kids, back when they were young. Just one afternoon and then I could slip away with a smile on my face.

This was not Lynn’s best Father’s Day strips, because John wanted to be an introvert. April used puppy eyes to turn John into an extrovert.
Happy Father’s Day

I figure April is still at the age that she doesn’t understand why “chores” could be fun.
