“I don’t like country music, but I don’t mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means ‘put down.’” Bob Newhart
There are plenty of non-depressing love songs in country music. Remember “I Will Always Love You” was a Dolly Parton song before Whitney Houston sang it.
“Hold Me Close and Love Me” by Alabama is one of my all-time favorites.
Today’s Country-Western music is overproduced, formulaic, and pop-ified. Bluegrass/Roots/Americana music is making a comeback, especially among our young folk. I’ll be seeing The Travelin’ McCourys on Friday. I expect the place to be packed.
did you hear about the country singer that quit writing country western music?… he had to, cuz he got his girl back, his dog came home, and his truck started…
Women are divorcing men at record rates and thanks to laws that haven’t caught up with the 21st Century where women are equals, they fleece the heck out of the man. Plenty of stories out there to turn into a typical country song. And to be fair, some men stupidly cheat on their wife/gf so they have things to write about too.
I don’t like lumping “country” and “western” together. There are few country songs that I care for, but many of the old westerns that I like (Gene Autry, Sons of the Pioneers, etc.)
A favorite since I was a little kid is “Twilight on the Trail” (1935). You can find several versions on Youtube. It includes the line “Guess I was born that way” decades before Lady Gaga was born…

It is not so much about the blues when the red and green ones are so much better. Go ask Alice if you need more.

Nobody’s recorded a decent country-Western song ever.

Hank Williams is still the king. Todays country music—— rock riffs plus a twangy singing voice.

I can’t tolerate country or rap, but I don’t expect every one to love heavy metal as I do.

There’s some Country music that I like, but then I like there’s always some songs in any type of music to like if you listen to enough of it.

“Country music is three chords and the truth” is a famous quote by 1950’s songwriter Harlan Howard that describes the essence of country music.
