No, Bill: that’s tomorrow. And I ought to know: it’s my birthday. I always go out and look at the Sun on that day. If it isn’t eclipsed, I figure I’ve got another year to live. (and I’m an astronomy educator, so I always know when it’s safe!) (Yeah, I know: you can’t expect rerun strips to match the date precisely).
Last month was one of the coldest Januarys that I can remember for a long time. I was concerned about a high heating bill, but, we had our downstair windows replaced in the Fall so I was pleasantly pleased to see that our gas bill was much lower even though it seemed that our furnace was running non-stop. Enter February and we’re getting warm weather way too early. Nature is such a Mother!
There is a very weak scientific basis for the shadow hypothesis. An overcast (no shadow) keeps heat in; a clear sky (shadow) allows the heat to escape.
This is more of a daily phenomenon than something that lasts for weeks.
Even 6 more weeks would be an early spring around here. We’re currently in the middle of our annual mid-winter thaw, but winter will be back as usual.
I have my own personal groundhog living in a burrow under the hill in my front yard. He came out on Thursday but didn’t see his shadow because it was overcast and drizzly. I’ll check on him tomorrow.
I get it now!! Having lived in OH for 25 years, I get the whole Puxatawny Phil thing. I always thought the cold froze their brains (Puxatawnians), now I realize they’re just desperate for anything to bring a relief to winter weather, even a lowly groundhog.
Mr. Watterson, sir, with all due respect Groundhog Day is February 2. I know this is old strip, but you dated it “2-1” down in the bottom right corner. Shame shame shame.
I’m confused, I can’t tell whether or not he WANTS the 6 more weeks of winter. The light could be used to create a shadow, but it can also be used to get rid of a shadow. Pls help.

But won’t that light create a shadow if one should show up, or is that what he wants?

Groundhogs’ Day is tomorrow, Calvin.

He’s a day early, since this strip is from 1995 and Groundhog Day falls on Sunday this year.

He’s 35% accurate so whatever he predicts is most likely the opposite.

Well, I loved the movie

If he sees his shadow, we’ll have six more weeks of winter. If he doesn’t, we’ll only have 42 days of winter.
monya_43 about 1 month ago
Not to be confused with ground hog, which is actually sausage.

Not a single extension left in the house. Probably means have the lights, the tv, and some appliances don’t work.

Originally printed February 2nd, 1995. But I remember in 2015 when the groundhog saw his shadow and we had TWELVE more weeks of winter!
