I’m baffled that people are so incredibly stupid that they don’t know that tariffs are taxes, collected at ports of entry, paid for by consumers. Of course, if more people were intelligent, Traitor Trump would be in prison…..
Also, as has been pointed out elsewhere, those who earn less than $400,000 per year (most people) would not be seeing any tax increase if Trump lost in 2024. The only ones who would see their taxes rise, would be the ones who have lower tax rates despite having more money. The alternative would be cuts or the elimination of healthcare. veterans’ benefits, public education, social security, overtime pay, and so forth.

In a nutshell tariffs are only going to cost you the consumer extra money if you buy an imported product. When a television imported from China originally priced at $1,000 is subject to a 25% tariff, the importer (e.g., Walmart) must pay $250 to U.S. Customs as the tariff fee. This money goes directly to the U.S. government and contributes to its revenue. To recoup the cost, Walmart passes the $250 onto consumers, raising the TV’s price to $1,250. While tariffs generate income for the government, they are not direct taxes on consumers; instead, they are fees imposed on imports that indirectly affect prices, making imported goods more expensive and potentially encouraging consumers to buy domestic products.
A 25% tax on a product instead of a tariff would collect the same amount of revenue from the sale of that product. However, there are key differences between tariffs and taxes that affect how they work and their broader implications:
Governments use tariffs to:
Protect domestic industries from cheaper foreign competition.Influence international trade policies.Generate revenue while prioritizing specific trade goals.Taxes, on the other hand, are used purely for revenue generation and do not target imports specifically.
After reading today’s screeds, I find it unconscionable that GoComics.com allows uncontrolled political diatribes on almost all the comics that I read, but still shackles Jeff Stahler’s comic. They censored him long before Buttercup stumbled into a win but that’s over. Why do they continue to limit his readership to only like/dislike?
Every Republican/conservative president since 1929 has had a recession or depression, some had two. tRump will likely have his 2nd recession by mid year 2025.
Tariffs, when used properly, can help build our economy by making U.S.factories able to produce products that are price competitive with low wage countries and those factories provide good jobs that dont need an over-priced college education. We need factories in the U.S., we won WWII because of our ability to convert existing production lines for the war effort. (the greatest generation was a lot more than just military service)
Tariffs are a legitimate subject for spoofs now, since a realtor is proposing them as “the other country pays, you don’t.” He would have failed Econ 101.
Don’t even get HIM started on how someone else is going to pay for tariffs rather than consumer. How can people, especially Republicans, believe in such “free money” schemes?
Look at all the pent-up frustration from both sides of the “aisle” that gets vented on a “non-political” comic all because GoComics decided to keep us “safe”. (Or something)

The government imposes the tariffs. The Importer pays them, then adds it to the cost of the product. The consumers all get a kick in the ______. What’s so hard to figure out?
