My bank writes most of my checks these days. What I put dates on mostly is vacuum-pack freezer bags. We use ’em when the store has a good deal on something we can freeze and use later (meat, cheese…)
I paid off my credit card in November and last month, got a check for an adjustment for $0.01. I am not kidding. I tore it up just to make their books not balance because that was the dumbest thing I think I’ve ever seen between the cost of the check, the cost of the mailing it and everything else involved on their end and my time.
MANY places that I do or have done business with have requested checks specifically. They don’t have to pay that extra 3% ( or whatever) for processing a credit card payment. I still write a few checks every year.
Before Covid, I paid my utility and other bills in cash at their offices in my small town. Those offices never reopened, I hate sitting down and writing checks (I know, it only takes a few minutes), so they now get dropped off every few months or paid online. I pay my rent 3 months in advance – my choice – just so I don’t have to think about it.
The late Rickey Henderson got a one million dollar bonus check from the A’s. Instead of cashing it he framed it and posted it on his apartment wall. The A’s ultimately questioned him about why the check had not been cashed. When he told them, the club told him to take a picture of the check for himself and cash the real check. He did.
Gave a check last year to our local high school for help with their cross country team. This was in September. They still haven’t cashed it which messes with my bookkeeping as well as my OCD
I send charitable contributions by check to avoid getting having my e-address sold to spammers. And the appliance repair shop I’ve been dealing with for the past year will happily take checks but charges a fee for using a credit card.
I tried to order replacement parts for a mixer from Betty Crocker but they don’t do orders online and they only take cheques. I tried to get my bank to issue me a cheque or send me a PDF for when to print up but they don’t do them anymore.

Lots of people still write checks. It’s easier to keep track of money when it moves more slowly.

It should, and I would allow it!

Even though I’ve been a tech guy since the ’70s, I still prefer paper bills. With them, you have proof in your hands showing what all the fees are.

At the start of the year write the new year on the next two or three checks. Gets past the habit of writing the old year.

Now we just accept paying fees hidden in the cost of goods. People that pay cash get screwed.

I still write checks for property taxes. Maybe when they stop charging for online bill pay I will stop paying taxes in person.

I don’t carry a phone and annoyed that we are going to a place where functioning without one is going to be impossible.

Still plenty of folks right checks. Especially at places that charge 3% for a credit card.

Fortunately, I don’t have to pay by cash, check, or credit card to use …

Even in the rare cases that I need to generate a paper check, I print it on my computer, because it automatically saves it in my check register.

I would think that writing January would be a big enough hint to then write the correct year.

When was the last time you balanced a checkbook? I have a neighbor who does it religously every month.
Commediacrit 1 day ago
Banks nowadays enclose instructions for balancing checkbooks to customers.

A lot of repairmen charge more if you use credit, so checks are alive and well, although infruiquent.
