As an avid reader, I have yet avoided Jane Austen for 70+ years. Love the films, but the books drive me crazy (I have read three, refuse to read the other three). Finally read a book this week that explained why so many people âadoreâ herâA Jane Austen Education by William Deresiewicz.
Was also reading an article about Nathaniel Hawthorneâanother revered canonical authorâwherein he castigated âthe hordes of scribbling womenâ of his day who were polluting literature with their gothic/romantic/sentimental novelsâpretty rich, I thought, coming from the man who penned âThe Scarlet Letterâ and âThe House of the Seven Gablesâ. . .
Very enjoyable read today. Seeing all the titles of favorite books from decades back and being reminded to look for them again. Was beginning to think that the richness of language had mostly been replaced with emojis and one-syllable texts. Evidently many are not impressed with the new trends and still hold themselves to the standards that have run through many lifetimes. Hurray for that!!
The book âThe Catcher in the Ryeâ has nothing to do with baseball, but the title does. (I guess 7th grade English wasnât a complete waste if I still remember that.)

âDecline and Fall of the Roman Empireâ: Nothing to do with a clumsy Italian baseball official.
âTom Jonesâ: Not a biography of the once-popular singer.
âDivine Comedyâ: Not a retrospective of the female impersonator.
âSamuel Pepys Diaryâ: Not the memoirs of a Peeping Sam.
âThe Vicar of Wakefieldâ: Not about a âwokeâ clergyman.
âDemocracy in Americaâ: A fantasy-fiction account of current United States political institutions.

The Catcher in the Wry by Bob Uecker. He was an ok player, decent author and actor, and a fantastic announcer. RIP

OK, I give up. After reading all the above and enjoying great laughs, I have not a single title I can call on except perhaps
The Hornblower Series is not about Louie Armstrongâs world tour.
Yeh. I know. But all the good ones were taken. : ) Great comments today.

A project is all about building or creating something, ideally something great. But Project 2025 is all about how to destroy something great.

Catcher in the Rye. Boring story about a complete loser.
