I remember playing with matches, ( which I had, of course, been warned about ) and setting a small fire. There was actually myself and a friend. So anywhoo….his mom came out with a pan of water and that was the end of the fire. She asked ” ok , who has the matches? ” I was the one that had them and I still remember the smug look on my friends fce as he turned his pockets inside out and said ” not meeee..” So I did aCalvin and turned around and ran away. I went to the playground and hid there for something like an hour or whatever it was. Finally, I went home and took my medicine even though I was sooo scared. I got into a bit of trouble, but nobody killed me ….But the things a little kid can imagine…..

Yes, it’s about three or four inches wide, I don’t know what it is. I was working landscaping at the time so, it was just another weed. I always carried my camers in the truck, and this looked almost perfect, so….

It was taken in the early 80s up in the San Bernardino Mtns in southerb CA. About a mile altitude, give or take. I took a lot of pictures of “weeds”, being a weed does not mean ugly!

Manitobaman, Had similar experience at about 5 or 6 (way old enough to know much better anyway). Fire was about 6 - 8” from the foundation of our house over on the side where Mom should not have been aware of any activites. But directly under my bedroom window which was about 18” over our heads.

Mom never did “explain” how she found out, just ended the experimentation with fire and forbid me to associate with my classmate/two doors away neighbor outside of school for the next week.

After getting conned by the neighbor into breaking the bann Mom provided a lesson in trying to lawyer my way around a parental grounding and tacked on another week for trying to chisel the bann down to the minute using the calendar and then being off on timing to boot.

I never ran either. I had a big tall bed, high off the floor with plenty of crawl space underneath. I always had a bed skirt which made my hiding place the best in the house.

I’m going to second Yukoner. My code is V8N 3L8. We should help Slim out and explain. Our (Canadian) postal codes are based on the British system. All you really need is the person’s name and their code and the letter will arrive. My code tells the post office my Province, city/town, street, whether it’s an even or odd house number and between which 2 blocks my home is located.

Good Morning folks. The avator is a Dandelion gone to seed. Starts out as a yellow flower (for about a week). Turns into a white puff ball where each seed has a “parachute” that releases in the wind. It is extremely prolific, very hardy (runs all across Canada), and hard to kill.

    zip 01970.

I remember plotting with my cousin, who lived next door, to set our alarms for 2am and to sneak out of the house and run away to a wooded area near our home and try to live off the land. My little sister ratted on us the evening of the great escape, and my parents gave me a lecture about going to them if I ever wanted to run away and we could talk out anything. I was soooo embarrassed. My father even made me sit on his lap.

I still wonder if we really would have done it.

Ha, I ran away as a youngster, not sure why though. I’m sure I’d done something I knew I wasn’t supposed to be doing. I wasn’t allowed to cross the street alone, so I went to a friend’s house around the corner. My mum called and talked her mum - who of course tattled on me. When I got home, in a pouring rainstorm, my mum was standing in the garage, mad as a hornet. She wanted to whip me, but all she had was a fuzzy, pink bedroom slipper. I took quite a lashing with that slipper - still remember all that wet, pink fuzz flying about the garage. Mum and I still laugh about how silly that whole affair was.

Slim’s avatar may be a dandelion. However if it as as large as reported it is something else. It could very well be a Canadian Thistle gone to seed.

This weed spreads by root systems and wind blown seeds from an “puff” that looks very much like the avatar.

It is terribly prickly with vicious stickers. If you tried to pull it out of the ground with your bare hand you would wish heartily that you didn’t.

Canadian thistle is very serious scourge for farmers, but is also used by some as food. Boil it up and eat it like spinach.

Maybe Calvin can carefully pick it out there in the wilderness and live “off the land.”

Friend of mine nearly burned down his parent’s house after messing about with chemicals of some sort while in his bedroom. After the firemen had come and put out the fire, they were all treated to a large tumbler of scotch apiece. Ahhh, life in the 1950’s…..When he told me the story at a high school reunion I nearly fell on the floor laughing….

@cymbol, I once used the USPS to get a letter to my uncle with just 8 characters in the address:

    Abe 57325

Edit: name and number changed to protect his identity.

Hi Shirttail Slim – I’m usually a lurker at C&H and a poster on other comics, but mine is 30068 (Georgia, USA). I think it’s a great idea and I’m enjoying seeing where everyone’s from also.

p.s. If you’re afraid that posting your zip will cause someone to steal your identity or whatever, believe me, they can find all that and more outside of gocomics… :-)

    Hi onehipdad:

I really hope you get to Cape Town. My oldest son just returned and the pictures are fabulous. It is a very rugged, beautiful place.

My zip (for shittail slim) is 37023, North Central Tennessee

Sad part of all this is that I remember when the strip ran the first time, and I know what happens. It’s really crappy getting old sometimes, but not when I get to re-read C&H, (or “Good Old Charlie Brown.) Maybe this time Calvin won’t….

Shirtail Slim, of all of the foreign countries listed here, Canada should surprise you the least. Though I have a U.S. Zip, I am a Canadian as are many posters here at GoComics. I got C&H, Beatle, Blondie Adam, Dilbert and many others in my local paper when I was living there, so it should not surprise you that there would be fans posting here.

onehipdad……. send postal codes from EVERYWHERE!!!!

They will all go into my notebook, and someday I will sort them out and put them in some type of order….I hope. One of my biggest problems is being a world-class procrastinater? Easy to do at 79?
