So how long would she have held up anyone unlucky enough to be behind her while she does all of this? Hard to see if anyone is waiting behind her. That is why it is best to not write checks in a grocery line. No bags for her grocery purchases? Yes I know that this is a comic and the point was to be funny, but is not funny in real life.
This is why I never buy a purse that has only one section. I have a section for everything & know exactly where everything is in it. I never have to dig.
The cashier took a big risk presuming she was a mother! Those could have been her own lollipop and toys as momentoes of her youthful years. But he was hedging his bet on the type and quantity of the groceries that said “family”. Happy Mothers Day to all mothers out there!
Same with farm/horsefolk. Hay, shavings, baling twine, small blade, hoof pick, one spur maybe, and a tonne of cookie crumbs. Blatant give-away tho is the knee high, broke down, beat up boots we be sporting with our shorts in the middle of summer.
I remember those days of writing checks at the grocery store. But, I usually would start the check while waiting in line. Then all I had to do was enter the amount when the cashier was done. Saved time.
I used to dread going shopping with my mother. She never owned a credit card. When it was time to pay at the grocery store, she would pull out the check book, find a pen, slowly write out the check, show her driver’s license, pass it to the check-out person, and then we’d go. There would be another ten people backed up behind us. But she’s gone now. It’s been two years, and I wish every day that I could stand in a grocery line with her just one more time.

And for you Americans, “cheque” is how Canadians spell the word check (A bank payment piece of paper.)
(except when it is a check mark, or to check if something is in order.)

Now I use plastic chip card. Sometimes a wireless connection so I just wave the card. So much easier to let your money go that way ;-)
