OMG – Luann just made a giant leap out of the family comic genre! (But I’m hoping she lands on somebody besides Jack). Meanwhile – I do sense chemistry between Bern & Nil.
On one hand, I can’t easily imagine that either of these couples will really become a serious item in the strip.
But even so, it’s interesting how Luann’s and Jack’s attitude contrasts with that of the other two. At least their current social attitudes are paired up.
Bernice and Nil seem harmonious at the moment, but it’s inbreeding. They’d reinforce the worst in each other instead of expanding each other’s horizons.
Watch your toes, Jack – Luann might drop one of those 16 pounders…
.
I guess that is better than if he was sitting down and she dropped one in his lap. He’d really have the blues and that would most certainly put a damper on his evening.
Strip is going nowhere. Bad humor, lack off resolution to arcs.No balance to characters. Haven’t seen Brad & Toni, but had to deal with boring Piro arc.May be time to tune out.
Bernice looks like a teacher on a field trip too. so much for “fun and flirty” I knew she’d never dress that way. That’s more like Paris’ (Tiffany’s) style.
@ CruiserD and Schrodinger’s Dog: I think I side with Cruiser on this one. And how quickly Dog is to dog him about it! // I came to this strip in the middle of the Piro arc, thinking it was going to be an interesting mystery: Stolen TV, vending machine robbery, &c, only to find out that the entire thing was just a “plot device” to get Piro to kiss Bernice! Well beyond disappointing. And by almost immediately jumping ship (from Piro to Nil), apparently Bernice agrees! // The weirdest part is, judging by volume of comments, Greg has lots and lots of readers who actually seem to like this! (So, yeah, I expect to get pounced upon, just as Cruiser was, for saying this)
the ‘’improved" features ARE HORRIBLE. The featured comment slows down getting tp all the comments, THEN it keeps jumping back and forth from all the comments back to only one for many minutes before you’re allowed to finally comment, UGHHHHHH
I was even misled by the Bernice comment, which Luann wanted to record, that Luann was “doing things right” (which many took as, “doing things, right”) (perhaps the alternate punctuation is correct, after all) // To me, seeing this Jack for the first time after Bernice’ comment, I find myself thinking like the parent of a teenage girl: Bernice and Luann, the boys you are hanging out with are riff raff! Jack even looks like a creep here. And is anybody getting ready for finals?
It’s funny that Jack is one of the most normal characters in this strip and the others act like he’s not. No hangups, plays sports, knows himself. The kind of guy you’d want as a next door neighbor.
When I replied to a comment above I had to click on the REPLY several times but nothing happened. So I opened another window and saw my reply was on there many times and had to trash all but one but still on original window my reply doesn’t show it was added.
Okay I stand corrected it is a date with Nil. Like SD said I overthunk it. I will take my thumps. As far as the pairings though I agree with the general sentiment basically, that it seems appropriate for each set. Clearly Luann is very comfortable with Jack; OMG sexual innuendo!! WIth caveman! Although I think he is sort of a prototypical jock, which means maybe Luann can be comfortable with him, but not serious, unless he is serious, in which case Nil’s comment about his dating every skirt he can (or pants or shorts since girls don’t wear many skirts, I wish they did more) that he sees. Luann would never tolerate that. As for Bernice, perhaps they are kindred spirits. Whether that might develop more remains to be seen. I think Bernice looks quite cute, and they do make a nice looking couple. So we will see. This is against my opposites attract theory with this comic, to wit, Knute and Crystal, or perhaps, perhaps, Gunther and Tiffany. Mull that last one for a moment.
I wonder if we’re seeing a seismic shift in Luanniverse. For months, Luann has been dragging around like a zombie, capable only of mildly snarky responses when spoken to. Bernice has been chasing phantoms (TV thief, Piro) through the empty halls of her dreary dorm. Suddenly Lu is giggling & making a risque joke while Bern & Nil have apparently hit it off in their own glum way. And the last couple of weeks have featured sly running jokes (the chewing gum, bowling ball holes) and Nil coming to life. Lu & Bern are still all about boys, boys, boys, but maybe, just maybe, the Evanses are breathing new life into these stale characters and dreary story arcs.
Ha ha !!………….. Luann is doing this mostly for Nil’s and Bern’s sake. But neither of them, especially Bern, are likely to have a good time . A few here think they are a suitable (cute?) couple. However, Greg has not (to my knowledge) made a couple (or at least created attraction between) out of two ‘like’ personalities. Bern looks miserable (and uptight) which is not too different from the time the four of them were together at the Fuse several months ago.
Today’s theme is weirdness. The word appears in all three panels! Weird, heh?
Well, that Luann offers a double entendre might seem so. I guess it’s a sign that she is being acculturated into college lifestyle. It’s a kind of “growing up,” though it may seem to be in reverse and heading back to adolescent humor….
The way I read, Luann was saying a sexual innuendo and Jack replied likewise…and then commentators were referring those comments to something religious? That is not how I read it. And I am surprised Greg would have his characters say something sexual even though they were not blatant or anything…still, a sexual innuendo. I will give that they are age appropriate for his characters, though. Does this imply there will be some sexuality in this strip from here on? Strictly PG-13?

Bernice decided to go with her “running the PTA meeting” outfit, I see. Luann looks to be having a good time though.

Double entendres? A little unusual for the strip, but it shows how awkward the situation is.

I like this. Each couple has similar temperaments, but there remains enough variety to have new experiences or perspectives.

Big Balls
AC/DC
I’m upper, upper class high society
God’s gift to ballroom notoriety
And I always fill my ballroom
The event is never small
All the social papers say I’ve got the biggest balls of all
I’ve got big balls
I’ve got big balls
And they’re such big balls
Dirty big balls
And he’s got big balls,
And she’s got big balls,
But we’ve got the biggest balls of them all!
And my balls are always bouncing
My ballroom always full
And everybody comes and comes again
If your name is on the guest list
No one can take you higher
Everybody says I’ve got great balls of fire!
I’ve got big balls
I’ve got big balls
And they’re such big balls
Dirty big balls
And he’s got big balls,
And she’s got big balls,
But we’ve got the biggest balls of them all!
