Actually, in Columbus’ time nobody thought the Earth was flat; everyone knew it was round, except Columbus who thought it was pear-shaped.

If the world were flat all the cats would have pushed everything on earth over the edge, just to watch it fall.

Funny, in my 30’s I’d hear the fine XTC song Senses Working Overtime. At the time, I thought the line And all the world is football shaped meant it was distorted round, a prolate spheroid (North American football). As I got older, it hit me that, British band football is what we call soccer, hence round. Duh!

Flat earthers have an answer for most evidence that the earth is really a sphere(ish), but there’s one thing I’ve never heard them explain – time zones. If the word were flat, the sun would rise on all the earth at the same time, so why can it be daytime in one place while it’s the middle of the night somewhere else?

I was going over the pass into Sun Valley, Id. in a white out blizzard. It was a ragged old truck- "67 f150, and I figured since I couldn’t see the road, I would just bounce off the guard rails (Bumper thingys). I got over the pass, and stopped for gas. The lady says, You just came over the pass in THIS ? I told her my plan of playing bumper pool with the guard rails, and she kindly informed me there are none. God is GOOD.

I know that flat-earthers are wrong. But anti-flat-earthers are wrong too. What’s the point in putting all that effort into contradicting them? It’s their belief, so what? It’s like if one group believes that god said A and the other believes that the same god said B, one is wrong for sure because god is perfect and can’t be misinterpreted. Can you imagine? They’d be still fighting for it! :D

I was at my exercise spot when I overheard a couple young men speaking. One of them asked me if I thought the world was flat. I said no. He asked me how did I know… if the world was round, why didn’t we fall off it. I kindly reminded him of gravity. His friend tried to explain, too. I don’t know if he was convinced or if he still believed it.

Astronomer Dr. Danny Faulkner has spent some effort dealing with the arguments and “experiments” presented in favor of a Flat Earth, not so much to correct those behind them (mostly lost causes at this point), but to help protect those who might be curious and might otherwise have been taken in.

I once read that the whole thing about Columbus trying to prove the world was round, was started by his grandson who didn’t like the idea that his grandfather was wrong.

It is actually physically impossible for the earth to be other than spherical (almost) since gravity would automatically pull any object as big as the earth into a sphere. Centripetal force at the equator turns earth into a slightly flattened sphere.

In all fairness, if you look on a flat earth map (they do exist, including on the UN emblem), you can go in circles just by continually going east or west. On such a map, there is a north pole, but no south pole. Where you would fall off is the edge, which on a flat earth map, is surrounded by an icy edge, that sphere maps redefined as being a “continent.”

And unlike what some people said in their comments, the majority of humanity as late as the early 20th Century believed earth was flat. Can’t recall the exact percentage, but at the time of the Apollo program in the 1960’s, I heard that something like 25% of Americans were still flat earthers.

I will leave it there, before I am accused of being “stupid” or not believing in science…
