It seems as if I don’t hear the word “hefty” anymore in diplomatic reference to a person’s weight and bulk. It has naturally fallen from such use ever since it came to be the brand name of plastic trash bags. Imagine the flak flying if Earl had used that word (as I did, to my instant regret, a few weeks ago …).
I remember when the Sears catalogue had regular sizes for children along with what we now call “plus” sizes. What I hated was that they used the word “chubby” for girls but “husky” for boys. Husky sounds a lot more buff. Chubby sounds fat
Which merely goes to show that the occasional selective deafness in a male is, in fact, a survival trait. No man should ever hear the question, “Does this dress make me look [insert as appropriate]?” While a failure to answer such a question is perilous, a candid reply is fatal.
In addition to all your reasons. If Opal believes she’s fat, she may go on a diet. If Opal is on a diet, Earl will be put on a diet and the cookie jar will stay empty.
He could have just said, “She’s more delicate now”. Which is true, old bones break much easier and the aches and pains from even a minor fall are much worse.
Earl has apparently not developed the level of wisdom one would traditionally expect of someone of his advanced age — not to mention his many years of marriage. It should have been instinctive for him to quit after the word “now.”

Recent studies have shown that women who carry a little extra weight tend to live longer than the men who mention it.
