There’s such a thing as being dead right, Earl….

An instant? Two shakes of a lamb’s tail? A sec? The blink of an eye? ASAP? A New York Minute? Presently? Right away? A heartbeat? Two ticks?

Such is why I always keep a book handy and never get up until she is at the door. Even then I sometimes wait until she leaves and comes back in looking for her phone/sunmglasses/car keys/etceteras. But the book is always at hand even in the car.

I’m still annoyed the International Bureau of Weights and Measures went with “ronna” for 10^27 despite considerable public pressure for the superior “hella”.

Me seeing something that’s 10^27m tall: “that’s hella big”.

Jiffy can be an informal term for any unspecified short period, as in “I will be back in a jiffy”.

She doesn’t look even close to being ready.

She’s mad because she just realized that they only have peter pan.

A moment is 90 seconds, but the length of a jiffy varies depending on what field of work you’re in.

Electronics: One jiffy = the duration of one cycle of alternating current (1/60 second in the US, 1/50 second in Europe)

Computing: One jiffy = the time between two ticks of the system timer interrupt (usually 10 milliseconds)

Physics: One jiffy = the time it takes for light to travel one centimeter (33.3564 picoseconds (83,391 / 2,500,000,000,000 second)) (Can also be the time it takes for light to travel one fermi (or femtometer = 10^-15 (0.000000000000001) meter), which is about 3×10^-24 (0.000000000000000000000003) seconds.

(To put that last one in context, the radius of a proton is about 1.2 femtometers. )

It would seem that Earl is a computer guy.

Earl may or may not be a computer guy. But he IS a guy who will be sleeping on the couch tonight…

Isn’t Jiffy a type of popcorn?

When someone says “In a second.”, you can pause (a second) and then say “Time’s up.” When someone says “In a minute.”, look at a clock or watch or pretend you’ve just started a stop watch.

She’s not even in the range of jiffy. She should have said I’ll be with you in 45 minutes.

Or it could be peanut butter.

It looks like it’s going to be quite a few jiffies before Opal’s ready.

It looks like they will be late for the sermon. However I suspect there will be one delivered at home.

Opal waits on no man.

Her hair looks like a jiffy pop popcorn popper, ready to tear open and eat.

My Jiffy was always hard to start because it had to be hand cranked.

Earl, Earl, Earl, Have you still not realized that a Jiffy is a very slow moving bit of time. After all it’s named after the peanut butter, which is slow to spread, unless you want to tear the bread.

I remember when physicists were pushing for a jiffy as the time it took for light to travel one centimeter in a vacuum but it never took hold.

What I meant, my dear beautiful sweet mademoiselle was toutes de suite. (This author’s dad, family business don, said, “Tom, get it done now or sooner.”)

And an apothecary’s dram is 3 scruples.

Only way to be on time is if Earl tells Opal they need to leave at least 3 hours before they really need to leave

Opal’s lack of her typical bunny slippers is disconcerting. Maybe they don’t have a hard sole that allows for tapping out her irritation?

Actually, a jiffy is the amount of time it takes light to travel a foot, or about a nanosecond.

Why can’t people be on time? lt just shows disregard for your time and feelings.
