Sweet boy.

So many tasty recipes for cabbage: the classic, stuffed and braised; and the Japanese pancake, okonomiyaki, with shrimp and bacon; and my new favorite, the Swedish kalpudding, a meatloaf with caramelized cabbage and onions. They’re all delish!

At the farmers’ market this past Saturday I scored some beets – though they had radishes, too!

No cabbages..

January = cabbage soup.

I would think by January that cabbage might be a little “ripe”.

It’s the thought that counts!

I think Mrs. Macintosh is happy with the cabbage. Sure beats one apple.

Honestly, the cabbage will stick in her memory much more than another stereotypical apple anyway.

My grade school was (and still is) surrounded by cabbage farms. You didn’t need to go to the farmer’s market to get fresh cabbage. There were plenty of them on the side of the road after they fell off the truck during harvest season.

And speaking of harvest season… the stench of harvesting cabbages was a little overwhelming. Not a lot of fun during recess time.

What I really like about WtB is that Wallace is a genuinely kind kid and that his parents are equally kind and support his eccentricities. So often the weird kid is portrayed as a real menace in the name of funny and at the same time set up against his overly square parents who would rather yell and be strict than get to the bottom of what is actually going on in the kid’s head.

Mrs. Macintosh must know her French. She recognized affection. (It’s just a little cabbage, after all.)

She really likes cabbage.

Not likely, as apples keep through the winter—should be available through May or June at least. But perhaps it’s a particular farm selling only its own produce, separate from local orchards with storehouses.
