Dandelions are actually a very tough hardy flower, and roses, the actual NY state flower, can be a difficult weed to deal with if you ever come across the feral variety.

Pretty flower, but extremely difficult to eradicate from your yard. I think that some people possibly eat the greens and I believe there is such a thing as dandelion wine.

It’s a weed, just like NYC has become.

We picked the leaves and my mother boiled them down and did her hocus pocus and they were delicious

This strip has really gone downhill: it’s supposed to at least be taking place in a different time and space from modern life. Now we asked to believe that a place called “New York State” existed in that world.

There certainly is and one that is mixed with burdock. The New York whine is Eric Adams!

I don’t know about it being the official flower of the state of New York, but it certainly is the official weed of my yard.

The name, dandelion comes to us from the French “Dent de lion” or “tooth of the lion” because of the shape of its leaves.

According to a beekeeper friend on mine dandelions are good. They are one of the first flowers of spring and are important in the making of more bees. He recommends letting them flower but then cutting them before they go to seed.

The whitish sap is actually latex and can be used to make rubber. I don’t know what the quality of it is as compared to a rubber tree. Obviously, it’s not economically sound to make rubber this way or someone would be doing it. Even in World War II when Japan controlled many of the rubber-producing countries in the world, the United States made artificial rubber from other materials.

The best “organic” way of controlling dandelions and other weeds is frequent waitering and cutting of the lawn. I am careful of using fertilizers on my lawn because I live on a small lake that drains to a creek that empties into the city’s water supply. Whatever I put on my lawn I wind up drinking a week later.

This technique is based on Darwin’s concept of “survival of the fittest.” With adequate water and frequent mowing, grass is fitter than weeds.

However, the emblem of the University of Rochester in NY is the dandelion.

My mom made some greens from dandelions once. OMG YUK YUK YUK unbelievably bitter and left a horrible taste in your mouth.

My very first hangover was due to dandelion wine, ~60 years later I can still recall the agony.

The statement is an insult to the dandelion. New York would deserve stinging nettles, let alone dandelions Stink weed might be appropriate.

Not even close. I grew up in Chicago, I’ve visited New York. Mastroianni and Hart have obviously never visited Alaska in the summer. Entire lawns in Anchorage are nothing but yellow flowers and white puffs.

Vineland, NJ has a dandelion festival in the spring. Lots of salads and wine. Allegedly.

I like dandelions. I really don’t understand why people think they are weeds.

They’re used for bee pollination…however, when googled it says rose, trillium is wildflower, but daffodils was it after 911 and before the rose.

Dandelions, as well as many other misunderstood “weeds”, are excellent sources of food, from root to flower.

Some gardeners in Wisconsin actually plant them … much to the chagrin of their downwind neighbors, and with the help of brandy Manhattans.

It may not be the official state flower of any state, but it’s certainly the UNofficial state flower of many states – Michigan, for one.

Dandelions are one of the first food sources for bees. Without bees we would have very few food choices.

Ripped up the backyard about 6 years ago and had a beautiful Japanese garden put in. Lovely, with rocks and trees and lanterns and a fountain and pool. And dandelions. There has to be a zen koan there.

Dandelion was the official flower of Detroit, then the team improved, aa bit.

Or any state.

I’m sitting here on a rainy day remembering what we used to say down South: “The official State Flower of Mississippi is Mildew”. :)

I remember the song “Dandelion Wine” by Tom T. Hall.

My Father use to make Dandelion Wine and bottled a case or so ….. put the full bottle on the third floor laundry room ….. one “HOT” summer day we heard some sound but didn’t really pay attention ……. Later, in the kitchen next floor down …….. something started dripping from the kitchen ceiling ….. we all went up to find out what happened …… there we found half a dozen or so broken bottles and all the wine all over the floor ……………… 50 years later could still faintly smell the wine …… ;)

I don’t mind dandelions. They are pretty. Just mow them and keep on going.

And what is the New York reference about? I have been plagued with dandelions in all of the (many) US states I have lived in…

Reading about the dandelion wine reminded me of a homemade wine I tasted when I married into a Southern family: kudzu wine? Not sure if I’m remembering correctly. Is that a thing? I divorced out of that family, so not sure. It was a Southern Baptist family, so maybe I’m confused.
