Birds are returning to our feeders. Bluebirds almost every day. Same for robins, finches, wrens, nuthatches, chickadees, woodpeckers of several types, and even a couple of doves. And somewhere in the night an owl is broadcasting.
Thank goodness. Spring is still taking its time arriving and more rain holds back seed and flowers. Been a very gray winter. The birds are a happy sight.
I’m a little surprised that Calvin asks whether he should put the prize money in a trust fund or blow it all at once. Blowing it all at once is much more fitting to his character. Dad must be having some influence on him.
Man this is a good strip. I think Calvin’s going a little crazy, it looks like he ate a block of fudge the size of an iPad. Also Hobbes’ line at the end made me laugh out loud. I bet his dad would say: ‘disappointment builds character’ lol
Robin’s usually stay in my state year round. We know when spring comes because the frogs in the marsh start singing. We call them peepers. I did see my first cardinal yesterday. So beautiful.
Despite all the times I’ve read this, over all the years, I never understood this. Why would he think there’s a civic ceremony? plaque? and reward money large enough for a trust fund? is dad play tricks on his fragile little mind again?
We have robins all year here (Oregon). In the summer, it’s the California birds and in the winter Alaskan. Someone got a PhD proving they were two genetically distinct populations.
I can commiserate with Calvin. I was excited to see my first Robin a couple of weeks ago and when I went to share my joy, everyone shared Hobbes’ response with me. Just wait til I see my first UFO! And nobody better say “Oh, yah. I saw one just the other day…” when I tell them about it!
We had robins come home about a month ago here in Spokane WA USA. It makes my day for sure that it is the first sign that Spring was coming. Felt sorry for them when we had a few snow flurries.
I was the 9th of 11 children. I never had any delusions that anything I did was special. It did make growing up easier for me. I was never the center of the universe, so adulthood was not a rude shock for me.
It bugs me no end that I can’t casually mention I saw a robin for the first time in a given spring without the other person saying they or someone they know saw one previously, maybe days earlier or maybe it was a flock of robins, and all in a tone of voice that seems to say “so what?” to my comment, as if it were some kind of competition and I was bragging but not even close to winning. Ugh.

Are the strips out of order? I remember these last three strips being from an earlier book collection than last week’s.
Calvinist, can you help me out here?

That’s the robin song scam. They always come in singing that they are the first robin of spring. In California, they sing it in February.

For all we know, it could have been a winter robin! (i.e. the robins that don’t migrate and bulk up for the winter)
