> Oh for goodnessâ sake, Evans!! Have you been to an airport in the last 13 years?>Obviously not, as he has demonstrated on numerous previous occasions.
Itâs official! They are leavingâ no turning back now! Previously, I had thought that Gunther would back out of going to Peru, which again demonstrates how inaccurate my predictions are. Incidently, it is amusing how Delta does not know how wrong she isâŠ
I have a very sleepy Irish Setter by the name of Katie who keeps bopping me to put her to bed! Since Iâve a good book to finish, guess Iâll take herâŠand meâŠupstairs. BTW, for those who are interested, I posted a picture of her on yesterdayâs board near the bottom. âNite all!-ââââââââââââââââââââââââââââ-âNo man is an Island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the Continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friends or of thine own were; any manâs death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankind; And therefor never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee." (John Donne, 1571?-1631)
âKind of reminds me of the scene in âSoylent Greenâ where they are leading the old man into the final room with all the scenes of the Earth as it was; just before he⊠he⊠â snif â âŠyou knowâŠâŠ.â
I love that movie, itâs one of my favorites of all time. That particular scene is so moving and with that exquisite music (I looked it up and am listening to it right now.)
So the one person whose world is actually rocked by this turn of events is Miss always-on-top-of-things Delta..Might be interesting to see TJâs reaction while weâre at it.
I guess since that last scene when Quill and Luann were fighting about how much time they spend together, they havenât spent much time together or even spoken to each other.
If you took the time to cook a meal for someone for a week, and they kept pointing out the lasagna noodles werenât perfectly aligned, and that the they only tasted four cheeses instead of five, and the clean plates you served them on didnât happen to match the tablecloth this time, but yet they were able to chew and digest the food, and you knew that the food you prepared wasnât really bad, and the tablecloth served itâs purpose despite their protests, how would you feel? â Nothing wrong with noticing details, or pointing things out, as we all had been named âLuannalyzersâ (according to the âconstruct-o -siteâ), but thereâs a difference between pointing out the details (including perceived/actual mistakes), and taking a wrecking ball to the whole thingâŠ
I think if some commenters had experienced more international airports, they might not be so quick to criticize the depiction of the Pitts Airport here. The sign for gate 46 looks as though it might well be an electronic board, changeable as needed. The Machu Picchu poster may well be only one of several adorning the wall leading that passageway, showing various touristic attractions served by flights from there. All the heavy screening might be further within. Or not. Condensing and focussing are necessary attributes of small-scale sequential narrative art.
As unrealistic airports arenât really important to the story, Iâd like to propose focusing on the more important part: They made it to the airport, and the couple goes off, hand in hand.
Youâll see Gunther and Rosa in a year or two. Gunther will be a man. He will be the polar opposite of the âpajama boyâ that is shown in modern America. It will be refreshing.
I suggest the detail critics become more familiar with the process of following a comic strip storyline done in simplified three and four panel installments. Rosa and Gunther are flying off to Peru. Done. I guess Greg has been hitchhiking around the USA or the galaxy for that matter instead of flying. Perhaps he should just quit. Heâs BUM. A HACK.
Now we have people b1tch1n about the airport scene?.Itâs his story, he will write it as he wants..Donât like it?.Then stop coming back!.Especially stop b1tch1n about it.
Looks like our boy Guntherâs going through with it! I thought he was going to chicken out at the last minute. And do you all think at Greg will end the Luann strip? All the characters finally graduated high school and how much longer can he keep it going? Maybe itâll end with Luann and Quill getting married.
I think this is going to make a fun summer of cartoons for Greg to draw for us! And then, Gunther bails and comes back to Moony Uni where he and Luann have a love-child.
The Peru-specific poster shows that this is a flight to that country, not a connecting flight to another US airport. That means that Gunther and Rosa are inside the international departure area of the airport, where you have gone through TSA screening and passport checks. They do not have those things for individual gates (âGate 46â) but for that whole part of the airport. Quill would not be allowed there. This is simply bad story-telling. Quill could have been shown saying good-bye to the couple as they prepared to go through the screening area, since thatâs what real people do at real airports.
Come with me, and letâs go wanderFar beyond the wild blue yonder,Out where stars roam free.Though the journeyâs far from breezy,Stick with me, Iâll make it easy-You can depend on me.
No, itâs a small airport. As evidenced by the fact that the hyphen and the S fell of the âGates 4-6â sign and havenât been replaced. I was actually more interested in the fact that G & R are really going to South America, and that it wasnât all a terrible mistake as they were really going to work at the free clinic in Peru, Indiana.
I never guessed that Greg would retire Gunther. Now he needs to hand them off to a disciple to follow their lives in Peru. Iâm sure it will be interesting.
No .. I have a mechanism in my brain that tells me that I donât have to go around pointing out everybodyâs flaws every five minutesâŠ.. â Do you really think criticizing people constantly ( notice that I emphasized it, and didnât say âonly a bitâ)⊠actually would make them do better? Do you go around in real life and walk up to people in the middle of their day and do that, to make the world better? In that case, let me point out your flaws in critiquing, and say âyou missed some detailsâ, and so I want you to do better, so shape up! â There⊠see? âGet the picture?â
and the âexplaining awayâ is only using thought and imagination to try to counteract all of the ânon creativeâ nitpicking being done⊠â (1) âthe water level in the coffeepot isnât standard for an actual coffee makerâ.(2) âthat other wall is not perpendicular to the floorâs actual height! Itâs not congruent to the tangible fixtures! Itâs not right!!â â Does it really feel good to go around looking for these things in a drawing ? A comic strip, for that matter? What about Tweety Bird? Do you say that heâs âinaccurately drawnâ? Or Taz? Or better yet, Bugs? Do you hate on those long hallways in Tom and Jerry? Do you go around criticizing âoptical illusionsâ, too?
Artistic License needs a reason to be used, namely that it helps tell a better story. This misrepresentation of how airports work in no way tells a better story â the same story could be told just as effectively by having Quill watch the couple as they head to the departure screening, not to the gate. As it is, itâs a pointless distraction that weakens the story on account of its not being realistic. Artistic License would allow Greg Evans to show Gunther and Rosa boarding a dirigible to sail through the clouds to Peru, but there would be no reason for it. Thereâs no reason for this depiction of an impossible departure scenario, either.
So glad to see Gunther getting some life experiences!! He can always go to college later. This is SO good for him! I just hope he doesnât chicken out before boarding the plane.
Luann is going to be working at Moony Uni for the summer. There, she will prove to the teaching staff that sheâs serious about acting. Since Gunther is gone, a spot will be open for a student to enroll and she will probably get it, after a drawn out suspenseful story lineâŠ.I would bet.
When they did that episode on M.A.S.H, it really seemed to tie everything together⊠and a nicely subtle â4th wallâ in the âgoodbyeâ sign on the hill to us all!
âDo you have a book or movie you like but thereâs a passage or scene you donât like? "^Let me say again, for the umpteenth time âŠ. thereâs a big difference in finding things you donât care for in a workâŠ.. and constantly , every day , finding things to complain aboutâŠ
1) TORAD â a little bad in that there is no airport farewell party, but a BIG good in that may mean theyâre not being written out of the script.2) Luann Againn- in Espanol. Hurrah! This strip is expanding by a couple thousand miles! (Just how far is it to Peru from Southern California?)3) No parents. Mrs. B. stayed at home after a hug; Mr & Mrs. A stayed at home after a fight. Which is the better send off?
Plus, itâs so cool that R & G are following Bernâs graduation adviceâ off with the bands that bind! And itâs funny that Delta, who has her life just as planned as Gunther had his, is still sipping coffee in comfort while Gunther is off to change the world. :)
Tomorrow, Guther thinks Rosa is waking him up on the plane saying âWe are in Peru!â. Next panel, itâs Gutherâs Mom shaking him in bed saying," Guthie, wake up, you need to register at Moony this morning!". Dream ends/Gunther stays!!
Hereâs the scoopâŠ. Gunther got the last seat on the plane because Rosaâs daddy cancelled her ticket. Boom boom, Gunther going to Peru alone, Rosa is Yale bound⊠so says me.
Thatâs what I say, Delta: âWhatâs going on?â With Frank and Nancy. With TJ. With Ox and Tiffany. With Brad and Toni. With Dirk. With Mrs. Horner. With Luann and Quill. With Knute and Crystal. Jeez.
âIâm sorry this bothers you so much, but Iâm going to comment on the strip freely.â-Donât worry about it RB. Your points were well made. It is after all, as you point out, a comment board, not a personal facebook page where decorum is the rule. .
Donât worry, Gun will back on the next plane, I promise. He has to have a Visa and Passport, which he couldnât have gotten this quickly. It took two months to get mine. Also, unlike America, Peru secures their borders, meaning they will probably put him in jail for sometime and then deport him back to the US.
Right! And thatâs what Iâm saying ! I never said one couldnât point out things in a comic! In fact, I have been trying to rephrase it in different ways to make that point come across. â And we all have pointed things out (though funny pics, or other means- and I do it too, but in ways that some may or may not recognize as âpointing things outâ).
still one more day ⊠what happens in tomorrowâs strip? just a wrap up, or a twist?
Hopefully, a wrap up. Let me see wheels up, or one of them calling someone to advise they arrived safely, or something. We need to move on. We need to get on with saying goodbye to Delta, and to what Q and Lu are going to do. And we need to start prepping for Brad and Toniâs wedding, and also setting up how the DeGroot household is going to function, once Lu turns 18. :-)
Thereâs a song by Gregory James (a jazz guitarist) accompanied by keyboards, flute and drums called " Machu Picchu". Itâs pretty upbeat on the tempo, too! â I only wished it was up on Youtube.
-Iâm going to comment on the strip freely-I know you think youâre making things better by identifying smaller issues that you describe as illogical, but let me try one more time to explain why this kind of critique isnât useful.-I belong to a short story writerâs group, and critique is exactly what we do for each other. But what we concentrate on are the major issues, not points like grammar and punctuation. There are paid editorial assistants who can fix those smaller types of flaws. -The big issues, such as whether the âleadâ is buried (too much descriptive detail before the action finally starts, for example), or whether the reader gets lost because there are too many unattributed bits of dialog, THAT is the kind of critique that helps.-A comic strip is an even smaller palette than a short story. With only 4 frames, there can only be so much detail included. If the reader constantly concentrates only on small details, the reader will never see the larger, continuing story (picture)âŠ.
Guntherâs mom made him get one. She couldnât have gotten one without him. Gunther knew he had a passport before she brought it out.
If Gunther was still a minor at the time, I would think sheâd have to get it for him. She probably had to bring him to the agency in person (if the two parents are alive then both have to be there with child), and provide a photograph of him. Of course, they would not give the document directly to the child. You wouldnât want the child walking around with it in the event the child is abducted and taken to a foreign country somewhere. Child abduction is serious business these days. Hence, Ms. B gives him the passport when heâs old enough to use it on his own.
Seems legit to me. My hometown has a small airport. Itâs mostly used for deliveries, medical/search & rescue flights and pleasure flights. There is also ONE small passenger plane that connects to ONE âbig cityâ airport. It leaves once per day, but not on Sunday.
âSecurityâ consists of the old man who checks you in engaging you in pleasant small talk. There is no âgateâ, you just hang out next to the tarmac door in the âloungeâ. It consists of an old couch, bunny-eared tv, coffee table, an ancient diner style coffee maker, a few ceramic mugs, powdered creamer and sugar. If you use a mug, you are expected to wash it before you leave. Thereâs also a faded, tattered poster of the destination city near the exit door. If you are a local, or at least pleasant, the old man will offer you a beer or soda.
When the pilot is ready to leave you all walk out the back door, across the tarmac and get in the plane.
ââŠso tho she may have mixed feelings to deal with I believe she will accept it as for the best.â⊠^Ultimately, thatâs what I think, too. I am not a "shipperâ as they say for Luann and Gunther, but I know itâs also possible for someone to âmiss the wellâ when itâs gone and dry". She could possibly also have to deal with the fact that âeven heâ has been able to âfind successâ. That could lead to what you said about her re-thinking whether or not she values Quill and I would wonder if it would be a âpositiveâ motivation (for her to value Quill) or a ânegativeâ one (as in âfuelingâ her desire to hold on too tightly). â Good point on that, BTW!
LOL! Donât forget the ârunny meat sauceâ syndrome, too!â Youâd be surprised ! Even if the cloth was black, and the plates were a soft, muted color, youâd have that one person out there whoâd have a problem that the colors didnât go together, somehow!â Personally, and for the record, I only care that the food isnât poisoned! As long as that isnât an issue, I think the rest of the night should go pretty well, all in all!
-withering criticism-There are some here who can be described as providing âwithering criticismâ. I, for one, donât see that phrase applying to you. My concern with those who dwell on the nits is that the overall picture is being lostâŠ-One of the things I do in our short story critique group is send up a âjump the sharkâ alert when a story pulls the reader out of the âsuspended disbeliefâ mode by just going a bit too far. And I rarely find that details about setting are shark jumpers. Itâs really more about a character suddenly growing super powers, or a villain never before seen who turns out to be the murderer, or whatâŠ.
It may be prohibited to photograph a TSA screening station, but it certainly is not prohibited to draw one for a comic strip! Even if Greg Evans doesnât know what one looks like, all he would have had to do to todayâs strip, as I mentioned, is change the signage from âGate 46â to âInternational Departures This Wayâ. Problem solved, tells the same story, and doesnât suffer from the distraction of not being authentic.
Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.
Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Donât resist them â that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.
If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading.
A good traveler has no fixed plans, and is not intent on arriving.
If you realize that all things change, there is nothing you will try to hold on to. If you are not afraid of dying, there is nothing you cannot achieve.
Do the difficult things while they are easy and do the great things while they are small. A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.
Iâd call it a bit of âUnfamilliar Territoryâ. But it sounds like the thing I used to say: âYou canât know where youâre going, until you donât know where youâve beenâ (as in history. Probably also works in reading maps too, heh, heh!)âŠ.
ââExactly why I donât post on the Facebook pageâ ⊠an interesting comment, given that the Facebook page is probably the best , if not the only place where your comments might actually be seen by Greg and / or Karen.â ^Which would seem to be a âlogicalâ place to go, if one wishes to achieve the aims of âmaking the strip betterâ!
TSA, metal detectors, nut jobs carrying bombs in their underwear. Wow, wouldnât all this crap have screwed up the ending scene in the movie, Casablanca? All they had to worry about was a bunch of bumbling Nazis.
Here is exhibit a, example another one , exhibit de third , example âetcâ , example "especially check out THIS one , example number "Brd check out this one , and example numbers âad infinutumâ, âI could show moreâ âŠ.
No. They were notified by phone that Gunther and Rosa were on the road to Peru. Sounds like a new Hope, Crosby movie. Oh, canât forget Dorothy La Morre.
A huge assumption. We donât know how old Gunther was when the passport was acquired. But it really doesnât mater. My point was that the OP that started this sub-thread thought he didnât have a passport or a visa at all, and I was merely pointing out that Gunther did have a passport (by however he acquired it), and that he doesnât need a visa prior to traveling for tourist visit of up to 90 days. Peru â Entry Requirements
Hide behind a façade???NOW they tell me.Just joking. I already knew, just never saw the point unless one of the less stable shows up with a machete and even then Iâll just tell them itâs the guy across the street. PROBLEM SOLVED
Back in two years, married and a little one in Rosaâs arms
And when Rosaâs father tries to take the child from them because they feel sheâs too young to have one or that Gunther isnât the right partner for her, the cry will ring out:
Of course, this isnât the first time that Greg Evans has showed us that heâs unaware that non-passengers arenât allowed into an airportâs gate area (and havenât been for maybe 20 years now):_
Itâs not a matter of doing it unnoticed. Itâs the possibility simply of doing it at all (by someone who then rushes into the crowd on the other side, and hides a weapon somewhere in the gate area) that makes this arrangement unallowed.
As I showed in the strip I posted above where Luann says good-bye to Quill in the airportâs international departure gate area, Greg Evans in fact doesnât know, or deliberately (or perhaps carelessly) ignores, the reality of how air travel works.
âI didnât notice that till you pointed it outâŠâ ^That was one of the first things I had pointed out, earlier, when I was mentioning the âgrey/black stripâ, which was in front of Quill! and even âcut offâ one of the bases to the âstanchion/partitioning devicesââŠ.
Re: a strip of what happens to R & G in PeruâŠyes, that would be great! At least the subject of where Gunther stays and what the both of them will do in a âclinic.â Donât forget it might also be a dental clinic or some other type of clinic such as a MH & A clinic⊠;)
BTW, did you happen to see the link I posted (the one directed for you) in all the âexamplesâ I was pointing out? Just in case you were saying: âI havenât seen a run-on like that, sinceâŠ.â
I guess this my last post in todayâs forum board: I still get this sad and nostalgic feeling when I look at Gunther and Rosaâs going down to the plane that will fly them many, many miles away to PeruâŠand leaves all their friends behind⊠;)
No, I mean a link to something you should see on the Facebook page. Look at one of the links (with your name in it) above, right in my most recent response to RB, right above AirmanâsâŠ. it will lead you right to it, and something should âpop outâ when you scan itâŠ.. youâll ârun onâ into it, at that!
K, just in case you didnât have time, here it is in a "nutshellâ. I was gathering âevidenceâ (Greg and Karenâs posts on FB) to respond to RB, when âlo and beholdâ, I saw the familiar ârun on sentencesâ and the name to go with it. It was on June 20th, just last month. So, apparently, it lets us know the âwhereaboutsâ, if you donny know what Iâm talking about.

seismic-2 Premium Member over 10 years ago
The Peru-specific poster shows that this is a flight to that country, not a connecting flight to another US airport. That means that Gunther and Rosa are inside the international departure area of the airport, where you have gone through TSA screening and passport checks. They do not have those things for individual gates (âGate 46â) but for that whole part of the airport. Quill would not be allowed there. This is simply bad story-telling. Quill could have been shown saying good-bye to the couple as they prepared to go through the screening area, since thatâs what real people do at real airports.

No, itâs a small airport. As evidenced by the fact that the hyphen and the S fell of the âGates 4-6â sign and havenât been replaced. No .. Do you go around in real life and walk up to people in the middle of their day and do that, to make the world better? In that case, let me point out your flaws in critiquing, and say âyou missed some detailsâ, and so I want you to do better, so shape up! â There⊠see? âGet the picture?â

JayBluE over 10 years ago
Iâm even wondering how much Luann is really floored by finding out that she doesnât have olâ Gunther around for the time (or longer).
TORAD_07 over 10 years ago

-withering criticism-There are some here who can be described as providing âwithering criticismâ. I, for one, donât see that phrase applying to you. And I rarely find that details about setting are shark jumpers. Itâs really more about a character suddenly growing super powers, or a villain never before seen who turns out to be the murderer, or whatâŠ.

This might be a stretch, but some locales may prohibit imaging of screening areas and the TSA agents. Iâm sure Greg is keeping this in mind.
For a very long time, photography has been prohibited at INS/Customs (now CBP) stations and in the arrival halls.
seismic-2 Premium Member over 10 years ago
It may be prohibited to photograph a TSA screening station, but it certainly is not prohibited to draw one for a comic strip! Even if Greg Evans doesnât know what one looks like, all he would have had to do to todayâs strip, as I mentioned, is change the signage from âGate 46â to âInternational Departures This Wayâ. Problem solved, tells the same story, and doesnât suffer from the distraction of not being authentic.

Speaking of which:

Itâs not a matter of doing it unnoticed. Itâs the possibility simply of doing it at all (by someone who then rushes into the crowd on the other side, and hides a weapon somewhere in the gate area) that makes this arrangement unallowed.
