Piro has admitted that he has no room of his own, and he’s crashing in other students’ dorm rooms. That is a major infraction of the rules at any university, light years more serious than leaving the windows open, yet Bernice is not only not calling security to escort him off campus but she is actually offering up her own room as his illegal crash pad for tonight! Talk about complete hypocrisy! If she doesn’t report him to her boss first thing in the morning, she deserves to share in his punishment, because she is being guilty herself!

New poll up: Do you know anyone like Piro?

Does microwave popcorn make for a delicious complete meal?1) 14 votes – Other.2) 11 votes – Yes.3) 10 votes – If you drink enough beer, anything is good.4) 3 votes – Yes, if you get the cheddar cheese one.Other: Occasionally; not frequently; It’s empty calories and poison; It was my dinner last night!; No, because popcorn is empty calories. It’s basically air with calories; NOTHING can be done to make microwave popcorn delicious!; Not without butter; Unbelievable butter popcorn from Boy Scouts is always good!; Add spices and white cheddar, yummm; Use plain kernels & sprinkled cheese on afterwards; no. it’s not real pop corn; If you eat it in good company, like with a taciturn unwashed homeless bum

And so, Piro plays the ‘please-feel-sorry-for-me’ card.I wonder if trouble is going to occur in some way or another. For one, I highly doubt the college rules allow a guy to crash on the couch of a girls’ dorm.Plus there’s the possibility of somebody coming into the dorm, finding Piro, and causing a dramatic scene. Unless it’s Des, who will probably be fine with giving someone a place to sleep for the night. I think they would have to be clutching a blood-stained knife in one hand for her to complain.

8The things I am finding interesting and thought provoking are a) the idea of a 10pm curfew for guests seems a bit antiquated. Hell, there was no time restriction back long ago when I was in the dorms. I can see potential 10pm curfews in single sex dorms where students choose such an arrangement. But, on campuses that I know of when we are talking about dorms with both male and female students, the curfew idea is usually not present. But, regardless, we (IMO) should not fault Bernice for being kind to Piro in this situation. The original construct was that he would be going back to his buddies room to crash…. his buddy apparently told him that he couldn’t do that tonight (at 1am). So, even though Bernice is showing signs of being smitten by Piro, regardless of her “feelings”… it would have been appropriate and kind of her to let Piro stay till morning as at 1am, other options for Piro would have been close to nil.

I am not sure what Piro’s back story will be…. but I am hoping that is IS NOT a) he is a war vet with PTSD trying to get his life back together in college, nor b) he is a former foster kid trying to cope with adulthood….. both stories, would be too melodramatic for my tastes. I am hoping that Piro’s backstory is something more commonplace… like he is a middle-class kid who got ensnared in too much debt, had to choose to use his loan for tuition and thought he could figure out how to bum around for a place to stay… but is finding it more and more challenging.

Well, my view of that issue would probably be regarded as being “conservative”, so I won’t delve into that particular aspect to spark a debate on that subject. But I don’t think Piro would necessarily harm Bernice (even if he proved to be attracted to her)… I do however think that there are reasons for curfews and also for not having “unauthorized people” in your room/suite past that time, including what she herself was advocating, when she went on a “compliance run”… – Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a “black and white and no grey” when it comes to most rules (many even allow “space” for “critical thinking skills”), but it’s not all the time that “rules were made to be broken (a common mantra for those who don’t wish to follow some of them)”…many times, certain rules have a benefit that people don’t readily see, and sometimes it isn’t until they go through a situation (not always a harmful one) that they then understand why the rule was in place…

Yes, true. I’ve known people that seemed “cool on the outside”, but friends and family warned had some “deep things running in their still waters”. You’re right- it would be interesting to see what Dez would say about him. – Dez has been pretty approving of most of the people around there. It would be quite telling, indeed, if she had “a word of caution” in regards to him…

Implausible…. you stated:“It’d also be nice if she did this out of the goodness of her heart, and not because she’s attracted to him. There’s no growth if she’ll bend the rules for someone she likes, everyone does that.”I agree with you that it would be best if it is out of the goodness of her heart…. and I do think that IS a part of her reason now. Yes, some of it is because she is attracted to him, but I also think that some is form more altruistic reasons. If I were to wager how much…. I would probably suggest it is evenly divided like the shared electron between to hydrogen atoms in a hydrogen molecule…. 50-50.

Whether Piro is or isn’t a student, the one thing that’s clear is that he isn’t paying a room contract. That makes his staying in the dorms illegal as all get-out. When that lady from the administration who’s Bernice’s boss finds out about this (1) Piro will be forced to pay back rent for all the nights he’s stayed in the dorms without paying and (2) Bernice will be kicked off-campus for letting him get away with it. (This is exactly what happened to a guy in my dorm back in the era when woolly mammoths roamed the earth, and I suspect it’s just as likely to happen again now.)

At the Drum Circle, Dez told Piro to “Get fire,” and be brought a cookout grill to roast weiners. I thus assume he has a reputation as something of a pyromaniac, or at least someone who is fond of flames? In that case, his name would be pronounced PEYE-roh. However it’s pronounced, he’s a freeloader, and Bernice is digging herself into a hole by allowing him to stay in the dorms.

Bernice, Dr. Freud will see you now. Story line not to my liking, but then we can’t all like everything all of the time, so I’ll just wait it out. If Piro doesn’t have PTSD, then he’s just weird enough to be one of those campus shooters.

Let’s see – Piro is kinda hunky, he’s got that sexy scruffy thing going, he’s kinda brooding and introspective, he’s not constantly talking about HIMSELF, right now he needs help (or at least a place to sleep), and there are all those unknowns… yes, I can definitely see Bernice falling for him. (and in my mind he’s Pier-oh. Pyre-oh makes sense given Dez’s comment, but in that case, why not just spell it Pyro?)

As long as our imaginations are going hog wild, I’ve wondered about that bald star on Piro’s head. I mean , wouldn’t the hair just grow back over time? If he’s homeless and on limited budget there’s no $ to maintain such fashion statement, if you can call it that. I wondered if while in the military he was taken hostage somewhere and was branded on his scalp in a way such that all the hair follicles were destroyed so it stays and the hair doesn’t grow back. Call me nuts but it crossed my mind.

Bernice has known Piro for more than a year (he used to store stuff in her room). She’s an RA who aspires to be a counselor. And now Piro has been dropping hints about his (possible) lack of housing situation, but she hasn’t made any attempt to have him explain his story.-(As an aside, I’ve assumed that Piro is pronounced to rhyme with “hero,” as opposed to sounding like the beginning of the word “pyromaniac.”)

And an interesting tidbit on the “Luann Againn” portion of the FB page: Greg says: “Derek’s looks were inspired by Patrick Swayze, who was all the rage after Dirty Dancing hit screens in ’87, and Miami Vice (check those rolled jacket sleeves!) His behaviors, however, were all his own.”, with the caption “Stay strong, Bernice!” in regards to Derek’s poor choices…. – (post can be seen at the same place listed, above)
