This doesn’t sound like a lotta money to me. Does a lingerie party last more than one day or evening? Could it even be $500 rent one time? Of course the cafe could sell stuff.

Well – Even for a little money – the lingerie party could be good subject matter for Greg & Karen’s drawing. Plus – with Les’s mother on the scene – we find out more about his situation. If there’s a heartwarming reconciliation – I hope Pru is the one who helps it happen.

Lingerie parties. You can’t go wrong. There’s something for everyone except the typically very conservative readers of the comics page. Prudence seems to be more enthusiastic than I expected, but I guess she has her own personal motivations for wanting that lingerie party.

Companies that are part of the ‘home lingerie show’ business have a local rep (like Les’s mother) who arranges a party, usually at the home of a hostess, but it can be at a business. These are PRIVATE parties; invitations are provided by the hostess and sent out to those invited. If you don’t show your invitation, or have the password, you dont’ get in to the party. The hostess is given a percentage of whatever is earned from each sale. Often the ‘models’ are the friends of the hostess, or employees of the company to keep costs down. If friends of the hostess, they may be ‘paid’ by being given the outfit they modelled. Sorry, no pole dancing. These shows are given for women, not men. (One of my coworkers does this stuff…)

    1. The tenor… the tilt… the drift… of today’s comments reminds me of a moment when one of my college freshman dorm mates put down a copy of “Action Comics,” sighed, and expressed his frustration at lack of female companionship this way: “Man, I must be worse off than I realized. I’m getting worked up by Supergirl.”

    2. Is there an implied double entendre here? Are we about to rethink the implications of the term “comic strip”?

    3. Should we take at face value Les’s description of what he has in mind?

I have gone to parties like this, but they were always hosted in someone’s HOME. The hostess made a little commission on the sales. If you have to pay for a place to have it, where is the profit? Doesn’t make sense. How about renting out the place to businesses for company meetings/training/inspirational seminars? I remember local hotels doing that here, where our whole sales force was forced to spend the day in “training”. I also remember that “training” included learning to juggle. Yes, really. What a waste of corporate time and money.

Les’ mom , huh? Does the apple fall far from the tree, or, is she rather more so, a milkweed that gets carried away?

    -

I’m intrigued as to whether his mom could be “the polar opposite” of him- ….or…is she so much like him, that they could potentially be “at odds” with one another?

    -

And even If they actually get going on carrying out this project, what are the chances that we could even, perhaps meet Les’ mom?

Wow. I have had so very questions about the Knox/Grey family for so very long. They are coming to the forefront for me.

First I wondered why Al Grey appeared at all. Why did he want to become what amounts to an investor and manager at such a tentative start-up? I think by now anyone who has been here a long time knows that I wonder if the Fuse building itself holds a secret. (I sooooo want it to.)

Then we learned of his relationship with Les (Al Grey is Les’ uncle; brother of Les’ mother.), and that Les HAS to maintain his job and he knows why (Why? WE do not know for sure.), and later that Les is obligated by court to pay his mother money regularly. That hints at a possible “why” but does not make it definite.

Also, we know from the Luann site which can be linked to from the comic page that Les lives with his uncle (unless what is there in the profiles has changed). So, Les does not get along with his mom (verified now), or his mom does not get along with him, or maybe one or the other had a court order to stay away (?), but he has to pay her money per court order (Why?) on a regular basis.

Did Les injure his mother in some way, including by accident? Did he borrow or steal from her? Is she a victim, perhaps even handicapped by him or handicapped in some way earlier?

How did Les become who he was in high school? Losing his father is certainly a factor, but many people lose a parent or even parents in childhood or youth yet still turn out fine.

Is he instead or also a victim with a conniving mother who could manipulate the court? Some people really are good at scamming, lying, and deceiving. Often those people take most advantage of the people they feel are most devoted to them (so least likely to question them or challenge them) or least able to strike back. That can include a child (or mother, or uncle, or sibling, or…)

    End part 1 of 2

    Part 2 of 2

What is his mother doing to warrant the expense of renting the Fuse? How much will that cost? Have they even worked up set fees? We know that Al Grey is Les’ mother’s brother as well as managing the Fuse; will he waive or adjust some fees?

How big does this function have to be to justify the cost? To me it sounds like maybe his mother is trying to get up a starter business in undergarments of some type and hosting something large to sell wholesale to retail – just from the cost thing rather than having little lingerie parties. (If a starter business and if handicapped, is the mother launching a business in undergarments for people with special needs?)

Now I have more questions than ever about that family, but maybe a chance to get some answers. I wonder if any of my questions will be answered this week or next week, or if they will take a longer time.

How much does Mrs. Knox usually pay to have one of these events hosted at a private home? I doubt that it’s very much, so I can’t imagine why she would want to pay any more to have it hosted at the Fuse. Pru (or Frank!!!) had better get really busy arranging for a lot more events than this one, if the business is to remain afloat.

Lingerie party eh? Definitely not the grade school level strip that some people pine for, although Luann herself keeps the strip grounded. One of the most interesting side arcs is we, by necessity, will get to know more about Les’s family, and that should be fascinating. The possibilities for all of the characters is daunting when you think about it, and when I have a little time and am not worn out from grading, I am going to do a Suki or Pipe Magnum Opus on them, for my perspective. Won’t that be fun? Amazing strip from this TruLuannFan, Seis. -:)
