Cranberry Space Goo (as the intrepid reporters at Breaking Cat News call the canned cranberry sauce) is awesome. That said, I have my homemade cranberry relish gelling in the fridge for tomorrow.
Poor, innocent, defenseless sweet potatoes. All they ask is to be baked in the skins and topped with a bit of butter and a dash of cinnamon or even a little cayenne. Instead they’re pulped into something the consistency of library paste and contaminated with six or seven sucrose-delivery systems. Oh, the yamanity!
Always had a dislike for sweet taters, now I know it’s not the stupid ways people prepare them, it’s the sweet taters themselves; I have a mild reaction to them! So bring on the mashed white taters, dressing and gravy!!! Happy Thanksgiving everybody!!!
I thought everybody preferred the orange mashed potatoes with toasted marshmallow topping to the white mashed potatoes with thickened meat juice topping.
I think it was sweetened sweet potatoes that clicked my theory that Thanksgiving Dinner is Anglo soul food. (Meanwhile, we switched years ago to an Alton Brown recipe that adds chilis instead of sugar).
Here’s the thing: Cranberry sauce actually comes shaped that way, but it oxidizes really easily, and a disgusting brown avocado is nothing compared to rusty cranberry sauce, and that’s why cans are shaped the way they are. Not the other way around. A lot of people don’t know that, because it isn’t the least bit true.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! We are having baked potatoes, a salad, green beans cooked with a handful of cranberries, and swordfish. (There are only three of us, and nobody likes turkey.) But, there will be pie – 2 of them – pumpkin and deep-dish apple. That way, we can have left-overs :)
2 pkg cranberries, crushed in a meat grinder1/2 cup sugar1 large can crushed pineapple
Crush the cranberries (a food processor won’t work because it cuts them rather than crushing them and does not release the juice)Add sugar and pineapple and refrigerate 24 hours.
No sweat. I’ll take the cranberry sauce and marshmallow sweet potatoes you don’t want, and you can have my share of the gravy and beets. Feel free to drop by next year—we’ll save a plate for you.
I like that “can shaped” cranberry sauce. My son had Thanksgiving at his home and told me to bring it if I wanted it since his family didn’t like it. I did. My grandson tasted it and it was gone in seconds. I guess there’s at least one of his family that likes it. I don’t know whether two, three, four … ??? will be enough next Thanksgiving.

I love sweet potato marshmallow casserole. Mashed potatoes are good, but sweet potato casserole is a once a year treat.

I don’t like candied yams, but I LOVE sweet potato pie.

I’m in favor of more turkey and stuffing at the expense of all else.

I like the jellied canned cranberry sauce. If you don’t want it, I’ll eat and you can have more mashed potatoes. Everybody wins!

Marshmallow casserole?

Masked potatoes are a gateway drug for gravy.

I like the cranberry sauce. It’s like jelly for the turkey sandwich made from leftovers.

Brown sugar, butter and pecans make a topping that is much better than the marshmallow stuff.

From his image, Frazz doesn’t eat a lot of potatoes or carbs he can’t, run, bike, or swim off.

Sweet potato casserole is a staple in South Carolina. It was served whenever we had meals catered at work and never lasted long.

There are a lot of things people only eat once a year. And I’m thankful for that.

My grandmother’s raw cranberry relish:
2 pkg cranberries, crushed in a meat grinder1/2 cup sugar1 large can crushed pineapple
Crush the cranberries (a food processor won’t work because it cuts them rather than crushing them and does not release the juice)Add sugar and pineapple and refrigerate 24 hours.
Enjoy!

We smash our yams. We add a lot of butter, a couple spoonsful of Grand Marnier and a couple spoonsful of peach brandy. Very happy Thanksgiving!

YEAH, I LIKED that can shaped cranberry sauce when I was a kid. It wasn’t as messy and still tasted good.

I prefer candied yams (baked with butter and brown sugar) – much sweeter and richer than the marshmallow casserole. ;P

Not yams. Sweet potatoes. So many people think that they are two names for the same thing, but they’re not.
