Skipping over the whip-wielding slave driver, the cannibalistic cave trolls, and the various sea monsters, those mosquitoes are absolutely terrifying. Listen to Danae, Kate. Stay far away from summer camp.
They, like many brochures, seem to have forgotten the ever lovely deer flies or black flies that show up several weeks in midsummer. Even trolls are not immune to them.
MAINE?!? How have I missed that they live in Maine. . .yeah, yeah, cap’n eddy . . .but he could live in any coastal n.e. state. . .this explains SO much about Danae. . .pardon my total oblivion. . .
I only enjoy camping if it is as primitive as I can survive. Tents, open fires, sleeping bags and bug spray. Anything more civilized and I get to wanting more fancy city stuff like electric lights, a/c, and cell phones. One extreme or the other. sigh…
That fantasy panel is not too far from what my Boy Scout troop was like. The scoutmasters were still re-living their WWII days, and it really wasn’t much fun.
It appears that the only one who actually gets out of the house is Danae. Everyone else sits around and drinks coffee, reads the paper or a book. Which is fine but does anyone work or is dad on perpetual welfare. I don’t recall the strip where he made a wise investment or won the lottery. Just wondering about this for a friend.
WOW, a Maine 2 month Summer Camp in East Waterford 1944. Climbing up Mount Washington, Rangeley Lakes canoe trips, Sebago Lake ….75 years ago yesterday in memory!
Many people live their entire lives without ever once going camping, and are poorer for it. Sleeping out under the stars is an experience that must be experienced to understand it.
As a kid, I only ever did “church group” camps a few times (aside from camping as a family). I like camping out. I like hiking, swimming etc. But the “summer camp experience” was incredibly unpleasant: bigger kids picking on smaller kids (guess which group I was in), terrible food (and not enough of it even so), small, hard, bunks in a room full of obnoxious kids, and not enough blankets to stay warm. That was the first one. After that, I prevailed upon my mother to become one of the counselors, and that worked better (You did not cross my mom!) Still not great, and still among my least pleasant memories.
I never wanted to go to camp. The summers I was in high school I spent swimming, horseback riding (and supervising younger siblings doing the same), then traveling to Denmark and Germany (participated in a contest which helped defray some of the expense for my parents), and when I was 17 and graduated, went to college. My sister loved camp. (Though she never described it as being like the excellent picture here, lol!)
I’d love to see more about the cat perched on the shoulder of the old fisherman. The cat is from some distant planet and they’re supposed to be biding their time before taking over earth.
Went to summer camp when I was ten but it was a Camp Fire Girls camp and I was not a CFG (none in my town) and everyone else in my ‘cabin’ were in the same CFG unit and had been going to the camp for several years together. Not a good experience — counselors didn’t ever remember that I was a ‘newbie’ and the girls weren’t interested in expanding their group. Several years later I was a camp counselor there and that was much more enjoyable. Except when the cook’s assistant shredded all the cabbage at the same time so we had Cole Slaw for every meal for a week. Note — it doesn’t go well with eggs or cereal.
So I keep the Sunday comics in the “library” & take several days to read them, just now realizing that this strip is GONE (from San Jose Mercury News).I’d hoped it was something contraversial & they declined to print it for one Sunday but this doesn’t look so bad. Not like de Adder’s https://twitter.com/Can_ada/status/1146433875893112835/photo/1
that lost him his job.
Have to hang out with you all now to get my fix, I guess.

Having suffered through Danae’s bright, upbeat personality for the summer, counselors will get a discount at the local stress therapy center.

It’s primitive as can be. (And then the weather starts getting rough.)

They can allow or not allow cell phones, but if there’s no coverage then it doesn’t matter.

Things are a lot nicer without the former governor in power (he hated everyone and everything.)
OTOH, the skeeters up here in the far north are bigger, faster and much, much smarter than those little things they have down in Wealthy Maine…
