It’s about to be sixteen jars of applesauce if the Robber Mice have anything to say about it! (Although they might want to steal a jar-opener…is there such a thing? …while they’re at it.)
Ah, but no commercial apple sauce compares to home made and home canned. We used to live not far from Karnes Orchard when I was a lad. Grandma (Mamaw to us) would get lots of apples and she’d peel, core and slice them and can them in simple syrup – plain, mint and cinnamon. She made applesauce of varying sorts from my favorite (heavy cinnamon and Golden Delicious apples) to my brother’s favorite (Granny Smith and maple syrup). My grandparents on both sides had cider presses and you can actually sterilize and can cider on glass jugs and it will keep a year (as if you’d let it). Mamaw made all sorts of apple pies, cakes and crumbles (or cobblers) and then carefully wrapped and froze them. Any apple skins she peeled off for making these were put in a can and allowed to ferment, then fed to the hogs and chickens. Watching drunken chickens and pigs on the farm were hilarious, but it did them good and the hens laid more and bigger eggs after a fermented fruit rind binge. The hogs put on weight. I loved the apple/peanut butter cookies she made.
She did the same for pears as well. Pear cider is a treat if you’ve never had it.
I keep going back to yesterday’s strip just to see Puck in his chef’s outfit. It’s just the cutest image. Georgia really does know how to give personality to her little creations. I said yesterday that I wish I could have a large photo of him in the outfit. I must see what I can do with a printer.
I’m good with apples. Applesauce, not so much, because when I was a kid, and I was in the hospital, I wasn’t good at swallowing pills. The nurses would crush pills and mix it into applesauce for me, so there’s the negative association for me in that regard.
Speaking of drugs, survived yesterday prescription pain medication-free. Only took someone’s head off once (the Boy, when he gave me a sarcastic answer to a question I asked him last night … for which I apologized this morning). Off to the orthopedist in an hour or so for the knee.
What wonderful bounty!! I remember, 20+ years ago, going apple picking with a neighbour; then we combined forces and made pies and applesauce. Neighbour said I was wasteful – I didn’t get as many pies overall, but I had more apples in each pie.
I know people love apple desserts, but me, no, thanks. I just attended a dinner where the dessert was apple strudel. I’m still grossed out. I managed to eat a little of the pastry, but the sweet apple mush, no.
A little off topic but not too much – I was forced, forced I say! to have a slice of peach raspberry pie over the weekend. I may never recover but being the brave soul that I am I would willingly throw myself in front of another slice to prevent anyone from the horror. Might even do it again after that. So brave…
Hi folks. Our 11 year-old Tommy / Burt lookalike Kirby has been missing since Sunday evening, the first time he’s missed “curfew” and stayed out all night since we rescued him as a kitten. We’ve talked to neighbors, distributed Home Again’s flyers to the local shelter and some vets, and posted to local social media pages but haven’t been able to put out local street posters yet due to the unforecasted Tropical Storm Imelda that popped up on our doorstep. Would appreciate folks’ prayers and boops for Kirby’s safe return. Thanks!
The kids at school always want to save their apples from lunch and have me make an apple pie. I just wish that it wasn’t so much work. And having the kids “help” me makes it even more work.

Seventeen jars of apple sauce, ten apple pies, 3 gallons of apple cider. Those pumpkin spice lattes are very energizing, it seems.

Well, you’ll not need to buy more condiments for Pork for a while.

Is this based on reality? Because I was thinking about going apple picking and I don’t want the same thing to happen…

My mother always added a few plums to her applesauce. It added a nice tang and made it the most gorgeous pink color.

Considering you can buy 24 oz. of organic applesauce for $2.50, it sounds like too much work.

What, no himmel und erde? No apple cinnamon coffee cake? No stuffed pork chops with apple? No apple strudel?
