Tara says she can’t draw. I have lazy eye and I can’t draw either – I took an art class to learn how to draw and it didn’t help. But to get school credits – Tara should learn something in this class. This isn’t day care.
The thrill of Nil. I’ll bet if he stood in front of a full length mirror, he’d see Greg’s hand drawing him. Or, he might even see me peering at the cartoon room. Twilight Zone stuff.
Tara’s drawing is pretty much identical with what Luann was drawing when she was invited to Zebo’s class the day Jack was posing in the nude. I guess Luann forgot.
I don’t know if I can continue with “following” Luann. Some of these latest stories are “boring” – but so is life … at times.I’d rather hear more about Gun’ and Betts; or, Gun’ vs. Les; or Tiffany’s struggles. But the strip is called Luann for a reason.
Since Nil seems to be a nihilist, I thought it might be the black hole that will swallow the solar system in a few years, ending the futility of it all.
I think it’s impossible to give a definition of what art is. But I agree with Luann that share feelings is a very important part. Even the drawing of a nostril leads those who see it to feel something. So do the doodles that Tara did on her sheet. I hope that the exaggerated reply of Luann in wanting Tara do not disturb the class or make funn of the prof was linked to a strong respect/love for Art, and not to have power over the class. I Hope more and more that Luann will decides to become an Artist.
Here’s a radical idea for Tara and Nil. Instead of taking art for “fun,” why not take some classes that will prove usual in whatever (Gaw Help Us) “careers” you two plan to pursue? Or at the very least, take take classes that will advance you toward graduation?
You don’t see Jack wasting his time with this class. And for THAT, I’ll give him points.
Besides, Jack is probably too busy with that Kaylie lady he met in the dog park a few months ago……., ;)
I thought Luann herself was pretty interesting when she went over to Gunther’s and wound up having to climb out the window. She should have more adventures like that only maybe with someone new in her life. I’d love to see her going on some wonderful and even funny but disastrous dates.
I never understood people in college who would sign up and spend money for a class and then either not show up or not take the class seriously. It was like, glad you had the money to burn.
Hmm. I somehow still feel that Tara and Nil are plants by Professor Zebo. With the assignment being to draw the still life forms, both Tara and Nil have gone so off track that their actual participation in class seems to be what Luann may be being tested on.
Nil’s work…. although very Nil-esque (odd)… is pretty good.
Tara’s work….. “girls just want to have fun”….. seems too foolish for even “fun girl” Tara to do (unless she is a plant).
So….. if Luann is the one being tested at the moment… how would she best “pass”? I suspect she needs to find a way to non-confrontaionally guide Nil and Tara back to the goals of the lesson. If she gets uptight and “tattles” she will fail, and if she ignores their divergence she will also fail in this test from Professor Zebo.
Once again, Luann’s character is relegated to a lame arc. Next week Luann is taken by aliens to a fantastic world where she’s rescued by Mandrake the Magician and Lothar. The week after Luann Jumps The Shark.
I had a grade 6 teacher who didn’t get that yes, technique is important, but creativity is the soul of art, without it there is no life in your creations. I still remember being hauled up in front of the class and given a very harsh critique of all the art rules I had broken on a class project. I was 11. The medium was construction paper and cheap school supplied poster paint in the primary colours which, even mixed to obtain other colours, inexplicably came out weird shades of brown, no matter what two colours you mixed, and big lumpy brushes that blobbed more than applied paint. I think I did a fairly passable garden of flowers. What I most learned from her art class was critics are one of the lower forms of life. Good lesson, actually.
Maybe he’s another Giotto. “The Pope hoped to hire a fresco artist and sent to Giotto a messenger, who asked for a competitive sample drawing. With just paper and a pen, Giotto flicked his wrist and drew a perfect circle.”
Low comment load here today. Guess left nostrils aren’t everyone’s bag. Now, if Nil said it was his colon, we’d probably have over 300 comments here by now instead of barely over 100.
Well Brdshtt my comment was made before I went to bed here in Chicago, and as happens too often with me, it is non-existent now. Let me, again, paraphrase: this is hilarity ensues. Nil is the punch line/panel. The whole set of panels in this arc, aim toward the amusing, at the expense of Luann. I think though that the idea that art is supposed to express feeling is very illustrative. I like any set of panels with Tara, and I am starting to warm to Nil. When is Jack going to show up though.
Why aren’t these kids at least attempting to sketch the assigned still life. Luann should be pressuring them to do that (before moving on to other objects). I’m guessing Nil took a picture of his nostril with his phone in order to have something to sketch from. The drawing looks good, seems to show depth. Tara is just doodling. She’s used to making no effort and getting A’s. But drawing is a practiced skill that requires effort.
College costs too much money to be wasting your time on drawing classes. They save those desks for football and basketball players. And they toss Felicity Huffman in jail for sweetening the pot. Seems like dunking a basketball makes too much money for universities so they are willing to overlook that variety of bribes.
And the funning of pretentious art classes continues. Luann tries to spout the correct platitudes, but Tara won’t buy them, and Nil transcends them easily….

What’s Tara doing in an art class if she can’t draw??

Zeno will probably like Nil’s “interpretation”. Nil’s imagination , based out of boredom, led him to go beyond the mundane, standard old still life.
