It takes a lot of Wild Turkey to put up with the relatives on Thanksgiving.

I don’t think they have much to worry about. Wild turkeys are too thin, so not likely to be selected for a dinner.

No worries. Wild turkeys are too scrawny for today’s consumer tastes.

Here on the west side of Madison, Wisconsin, we’ve got a whole lot of wild turkeys. They travel in flocks, mainly on the ground. They are very large, very impressive birds. I can see why Ben Franklin thot them to be worthy candidates for our national symbol.

The wild turkeys are too meat poor and would be thrown out alive.

I had a friend who raised a few ducks. He had a chicken-wire roofed pen where he fed them reliably and without stinting. In the late summer, he opened the pen and let them wander. When the wild ducks came by headed south, sometimes one or several of his ducks would leave with them. The next fall, the whole flock would drop in, and he’d let them feed, then shut the pen. That evening, he’d go out and take just a few of the younger ducks, whether domestic or otherwise, and re-open the pen. All winter long, the ducks would feed themselves somewhere in the south. He’d feed them a little bit as they went by headed north to feed and breed… and the cycle would repeat. He got all the duck meat he wanted for only a little bit of feed and effort. Smart fellow.
