This is actually a present I would love! I try and get with either my mom or one of my sister and play at “test kitchen” at least once a month. We try out a recipe from one of those cooking shows with varying results. Its lots of fun and usually tasty but not always pretty.
I’ve had those fancy cookbooks as gifts and they are useless. A lot of weird and hard-to-find ingredients. I prefer practical for everyday meals with a few creative easy-to-find AND cheap additions. Cookbooks tend to list expensive ingredients that send people hours in the store looking for them and not even the grocers know what they are, less find it without assistance from their computer inventory. So these cookbooks tend to end up being regifted or tossed in the goodwill bag. I got one for the new Instant Pot that I got for Christmas yesterday and the cookbook listed the usual never-heard-of ingredients so it will go to the goodwill bag – good thing my mother in law never visits. I will just surf the internet for practical and everyday recipes.
Seems to me that giving your wife a cookbook is like giving yourself a present. She has to cook it and you get to eat it. Maybe a better present would be a box with a piece of paper inside – confirming reservations for a fancy dinner and maybe a fancy hotel at the beach or the like.
Some people just don’t like to cook. I’m one of them. I’d have zero use for a cookbook. If I can nuke it, cook it in a pan (like my eggwhites) or eat it raw, count me out. My husband knew this 38 yrs ago when he married me. If he didn’t cook, he’d starve. I just never saw the draw to standing in a hot kitchen slicing, dicing, chopping, frying, baking, roasting or anything else.
Nancy; if you and Toni wear the same size, that “racy” lingerie could be “regifted” to her. She and Brad are still at the stage of their marriage when there is no Shannon, or, TJ, around ,it could come in handy. Who knows, it might lead to you finally getting a grandchild.
We have a shelf full of cookbooks. Several of them have bookmarks for recipes we actually make, but most of our favorites are copied from the Internet and in a binder.
I love cookbooks, and have quite a collection. I even have one that pre-dates WWII. So cool, because it is from a time when people ate seasonally and locally.
Men and women should watch what they give each other. What they give, they would accept. Women give clothes; they would accept clothes. Men give gadgets; they would accept gadgets.
Since so very many people return/exchange gifts-should have seen UPS today, line out the door and across the parking lot-and at all the stores exchanging said “gifts” I have to ask, whats the point? Since more and more people every year head to stores starting the 26th to exchange whatever gift was purchased for them, I have to ask why people spend so much time and effort in buying gifts that people get rid of, why not just hand everyone prepaid gift cards?
It’s interesting that we start this mini-arc with Brad giving Luann a gift (along with his ‘joke’ about how he overheard her talking to Bernice about whether her life would be better if she had a ‘big chest’), and then head to Frank’s gift to Nancy, which seems to some posters to be more of a gift to himself. Maybe tomorrow we get to see if Shannon gets a gift at all from her Dad, or what Brad gives Toni, or…
Just listen to Y’al. Different strokes … etc. Some women like/need the props to get the old man started. Some still may undress in the dark. Any couple that have kids out of high school should know what the spouse likes and/or dislikes by now. The reference to "more racy " may refer to last year only and he seems to have caught on to that mistake— just in time to make a similar one.
You know she gets all her clothes, jewelry, and personal items online or on her own shopping trips. What’s left for a guy to pick? Typical problem is clearing out that accumulation of Stuff. Decades ago, they had to skimp; and any little gift was appreciated. Today, there’s no Need and so few Wants. Lighten up!
Funny thing happened on the way to see Luann a while back. I met Lola by accident and discovered that she is a feisty and funny old cartoon lady. This is good because I lost Tina’s Groove and Soup to Nutz. Apparently both victims of burn out and other goals. Lola doesn’t have a care about being politically correct and doesn’t worry if you can’t live with that. She doesn’t need our advice.
since when does Frank give Nancy ‘racy lingerie’; seems like he’s always giving her appliances and things (like this cookbook) that suggest a task he would like her to do.
My wife would not like a cookbook nor would she wear racy lingerie either. Flowers work sometimes but they are not a good Christmas gift. You have to listen and pay attention during the year to get a clue as to what she would like. This year, a 50th anniversary Star Trek tee-shirt and the entire collection of the original Star Trek series seemed to at least get me to 3rd base. Home-runs are difficult.

And by the way. What did Nancy get Frank this year for Christmas, huh?
A lawnmower? A new rake? A new handyman tool belt? A brand new much larger job jar?
See? It works BOTH ways, people……., ;)
