Key to what was said is “can be construed”. No matter what context or what was actually said someone decides that it offends them and we are off to the races with an eleven year old comment. That is regardless of what has happened in the eleven years since.
Nice to see Pastis jumping on the bandwagon of all of the wealthy and popular comedians whining about how “PC culture” doesn’t allow them to tell the jokes that they’re actually telling. Poor oppressed snowflakes.
I don’t know who merits the most anger and disappointment, the insecure, megalomaniac writing and posting those screeds on Twitter or the delusional ignoramus who reads and believes them!
While I do, in fact, have a Twitter account; I almost NEVER check it, and create twitters even less frequently. Fat Orange Elvis ruined Twitter for me. Also, my interest in celebrities is small, VERY close to zero. I check out “Pearls Before Swine” daily!
Although the power of nuisance of twitter twits is real, it is disproportionate. They still are a minority, but they are more vocal and agressively active. Just like their predecessors in Germany in 1933, or in China in 1966, with the same tendency to tell everyone what is right and what is wrong for their own good, force them to be criticized and grovel and apologize in public and ban or rewrite ancient works of art because they are offensive to their thinking or deemed inappropriate… They are sincere, they believe they are doing it to improve society and just like others behind them, they forget due process because they think they have the moral ground. They function as mob justice. We also know, from the two examples I gave how it’s going to turn out if we let them take over. The chinese cultural revolution did want to make people equal and replace offensive art with something consensual and positive. And soon it just needed a few hysterics to point the finger at you for some fault they perceived or behavior they deemed offensive and you’d be sent to a camp without a true judgement and a chance to defend yourself. So it’s time for the majority to step up and stop this.
This is what is happening with the Romance Writers of America right now. Years ago, someone wrote a historical romance where historically accurate things happened. Someone just noticed this with horror and said the writer is a racist, the Board reacted and threw the writer out, and the organization has imploded over the stupidity and arrogance.
Too sci-fi at the present, sadly. I like the idea, but in the present atmosphere it will take dozens of years to happen. Perhaps three or four dozen minimum.
The ones who are offensive are not the ones who said something offensive 9 years ago, but the ones who are outraged because the rest of us are not offended.
