Okay, I draw and paint a little. I remember hearing other āartistsā denigrating olā Bob because āHe did a painting in half an hourā. I looked at this stuff and thought "Wow, he painted a background in half an hour.
Canāt help but wonder what Bob Rossās soothing little paintings wouldāve been like had he painted the Australian landscape ā¦ "Iām just going to add a sweet little drop bear to this tree ā¦ " ;)
YES!! Bob always drove me spare when heād stick a tree in the foreground or throw in a cabin ā Iād always react the same way as the woman! Bob Ross was a national treasure, and today I caught myself using the āBob Ross voiceā when brushing one of my cats. She and I had a good laugh about it. xD
Now we know where Georgia learned to tuck in as many tiny details as possible when she draws BCN! In my mindās eye, Iām seeing Sophie in the Big Purple House also watching and taking notes.
I video taped about two dozen of his shows then transferred them to DVD when that format became available. I have not needed a sleeping pill since. Turn it on, lower the volume and let his voice cause me to drift away with dreams of Peapod and āhappy little treesā and āthereā and ājust two hairs and airā. Me and the kids used to watch and count how many times he said āthereā or āHappy littleā something.
I have adored Bob Ross for years. Has anyone else seen the cartoon of a happy little bush painting a portrait of Bob? The bush and Bobās hair are identical. I particularly like his stories about his little squirrel buddy.
I was always mesmerized with his voice and how he created these tiny trees with the biggest brush thinking how in the world does he do do this and make it look so easy..
This is funny. I got my first edits back from the editor, Emily, for my book. She was very positive on my work and writing style and gave me dozens of pages of notes and suggestions. Furthermore, she pointed out that her suggestions are just that, suggestions. There is no one perfect way to write.
Now, I digested these notes and suggestions just like the Woman in todayās stripā¦
WHAT? How can I cut this part it is integral to the story!ā¦While you are critiquing my work, why donāt you just give me a paper cut and pour pickle juice in itā¦Yeah, yeah I can see that moving this would read betterā¦But I want to introduce the characterās hereā¦Australian Cattle Dog is a breed!ā¦Oh okay, thatās a much better way to say itā¦But Joel speaks in my head in a West Virginia vernacularā¦.Oh come on, this gives a wonderful back story for the whole world I am creatingā¦Thatās it, I am giving up and becoming a Monkā¦Yes, maybe moving it there would read betterā¦I canāt write any better, Iām stupid!ā¦Wow, I can add all kinds of detail hereā¦GOOD IDEA!ā¦This makes it perfect, youāre a genius Emily!ā¦et ceteraā¦
Marie (my wonderful wife), I need 5 double Martiniās RIGHT NOW!
All the emotional roller-coaster but without a little Pucky helping me through it. She said my book is definitely a cozy in style and length, but I am packing so much into so few pages that expanding some areas will make it read better. Because I have not been writing in the book since December, I can look at the book with fresh eyes. Emilyās notes will be integral in lengthening the book and making it read better.
Bob Ross was the greatest stress reducer in the universe! I used to love taking Saturday afternoon naps to that soothing voice and waking up thinking that things werenāt all that bad after all. R.I.P. Bob, I miss you.
Everybody is a critic, but at least The Woman is a talented artist so she knows what sheās talking about. (Actually, she doesnāt because itās not her painting.)
I think that todayās strip has enough tail-wiggling, wheel-spinning, trip-to-the-moon, catatude-flashing, coffee-and-catnip-powered angst-tossing strip Iāve ever seen in BCN!!!!!
Oh, I know that feeling when watching Bob Ross SO well! It says something about his ability that even when you thought it looked just fine before he started to add all that āextraā stuff the paintings still looked great when he was done adding said āextraā stuff.
Adding to the group who enjoy the calming voice, too. Weāve used him to calm down my cranky niece on occasion.
(Iād say he needs a bit more afro to be really recognizable, but he didnāt like being stuck with the hairstyle, so I think heād approve of the shorter hairstyle used here.)
Akin to what Snowy&Finlay said earlier, Iāve witnessed hardcore sports fanatics be at their āutmostā expressiveness after a deciding play, but more calm and reserved than this!! ā¦ Itās like watching The BIG GAME !! ā¦ Just imagine the commentary:
āLooks like heās gonna paint the TREEEEE ā¦ Right ā¦ ā¦ THERE !!ā
I actually recently just learned that Bob Ross had been a sergeant in the Air Force where he was anything but how he appeared on his show. He decided he didnāt want to be the person heād been in the Air Force when he started the show. Of course today, he probably have a painting show where heād be screaming at other painters and the show would be a hit (remember, his painting show is reruns).
Georgia left this comment "We go now live to BREAKING CAT NEWS! ā¦Is there anything more soothing than Bob Rossā voice? I owe how I paint trees, skies, shrubbery, fields, waterālandscapes, reallyāto him. We couldnāt afford art lessons when I was little, but my Nana Dee Dee had PBS! I still put him on often. (In fact, we fell asleep to him painting āMystic Mountainā last night when the Boy woke up not feeling well around midnight and joined us in our room).
There are always āhappy little treesā jokes about Bob Ross, but this has been much closer to my experience watching. An emotional roller coaster of gentle life advice dispersed during high stakes painting decisions. It always felt like that precious little cabin was about to RUIN EVERYTHINGāand then heād step back from the canvas and, well hey, it all turned out ok. In fact, it turned out great! Bob Ross didnāt just make art lessons more widely available to the public, he also taught us how to deal with (and accept) the unexpected. How to roll with a mistake and make it beautiful.
I watch Bob Ross on TV sometimes and he totally does that. He keeps adding things in and I think itās going to ruin the painting but then it just looks so much better. Heās so good at painting.

Iād Like to Teach the World
Iād like to buy the world a brush
To paint scene of love,
With mountain scenes
And flowing streams
And fluffy clouds above
ā¦ā¦.
Iād like to teach the world to paint
A perfect scene of peace,
So full of joy
With purrs employ,
And smiles never cease!
ā¦ā¦.
Thatās the scene Iād love,
What the world wants today,
Wish thatās how it would stay
Thatās the scene Iād love.
ā¦ā¦.
Thatās the scene Iād love,
What the world wants today,
Wish thatās how it would stay
Thatās the scene Iād love.

Grab a brush in your hand,
Letās begin today,
With a brush in each hand,
We can find a way!
ā¦ā¦.
Iād like to teach the world to paint
A perfect scene of peace,
So full of joy

Except for the fact that I canāt paint a line.
