Jonah has custody of his kid abandoned by her mother. Tom Ferrell has custody of Tiffany abandoned by her mother. Gunther’s mother has custody of her son abandoned by his father. Bernice has a half brother running around who she doesn’t care to see, and parents who are never seen. Then we have Leslie, Ann Eiffel’s cute little tyke who wants to strike Mother’s Day from the calendar. Thank goodness for Nancy and Frank, the oasis in a barren desert.
Shannon is trying to show some semblance of responsibility in taking care of an animal placed in her care. True Toni is a firefighter but shannon was entrusted with the class pet. She is accepting the responsibility as best she can.
The young lady has always been a bit short when it comes to politeness or tact. She reminds me of Veruca Salt (the insolent child in the Willie Wonka film, not the band), quite impatient and rather lacking in manners. Given her parental situation (Dad is a complete zero IMHO) I guess one would expect some poor behavior but in this case she is simply caring for the hamster so she gets a pass but only for today. I remember at Christmas time when she was giving Brad a ton of abuse in the shopping mall and that behavior would not have been glossed over in many households…..
Wow, everyone’s so harsh on Shannon. Can’t imagine why a kid abandoned by her mother and constantly being dumped onto other people by her father might have control issues.
I thought hamsters only came in brown, but thanks to Luann and a quick search, I now know they also come in white. Always said that the comics were educational, and now I have proof.
Notice that the “Ann Eiffel” arc was dropped? So what else is new. NEVER a conclusion to ANYTHING in this comic. Anyone care to tell me WHY Greg Evans never concludes anything? Care to tell us Greg?
That’s right. Let’s overthink everything here. Obviously Shannon has been shown “the right way” to hold the animal. She is anxious about Toni’s lack of training, and lets her know, in clear and not-mean (that’s anxiety I see!) terms. Nothing out of the ordinary here. Matter of fact, I was thinking that Shannon is taking great care of Nana. Isn’t that nice!
Observe. The kid has been given some degree of responsibility by either her Class Or her Teacher to look after that hamster. The kid is finally caring for something other than herself. THIS, is a very positive step in the right direction, IHMO.
Either that or Shannon, Yelled Screamed, and Stomped until she was given Stewardship of Little Nana. I hope the class doesn’t expect to get that “Hammy” back for it is now Shannon’s.
First Les claims a cat, now Shan co-ops a hamster. The effort to “soften” certain characters continues.
Awwww. Shannon is so protective towards Nana. She know how much important is take care of that lovely little hamster and want to be totally sure she’s safe. It’s good to see her take her responsibility so seriously. Even Toni looks surprised.
I have to make a comment on Shannon being an “obnoxious” kid. She is a handful, someone who will develop a strong personality, have her own mind, but being around Toni and Brad, will also develop compassion and empathy. All around good person. She is a normal kid, one that grown-ups should love and nurture, not critique as some disobedient freak, who has to be subdued because she might be all the things a new soul can be.
This is a different side of Shannon. She is normally self centered and demanding. But she looks so proud at getting to look after Nana and she is taking this responsibility seriously. I’m sure Toni is amused and not in the least offended by all her instructions etc.
Toni: Oh I don’t know anything about this? (Picks up phone). Yeah, (whatever her brothers name is) please pick up your ungrateful kid. She’s already wrecked our house once and she shows absolutely no respect to us. Maybe you should teach her some developmental skills, like manners. What was that? You are drunk at the bar with your roadies. Never mind (click – then picks up phone again)
Can this be the arc where Shannon finally learns to pronounce her R’s? The whole “Bwad” business stopped being cute a long time ago. Let the child’s diction evolve, already!
This is soooo cute! And totally what little kids do when they’re “teaching” you something. Shannon is the hamster’s protector and she’s worried that if Aunt Toni doesn’t hold it right, she’ll get in trouble. And mostly she’d REALLY rather be the one to hold the pet because who wouldn’t want to hold the hamster? This is the first time I’ve seen Shannon do something that made me think “Aww, how cute!”
This little guy is going to be lost in the couch before the day is over. Been there done that and my sister and I had to deconstruct the furniture and put it back together again before the folks got home from work. Not fun.
My older brother’s Kindergarten class had a pet fish—it was black and pop-eyed. Somehow my brother was chosen as the one to take care of it over the summer. The first fish died; my Mother bought a second. IT died. She bought another. And when school started again in the fall, she “confessed all” to the teacher, who laughed and said the fish got replaced a LOT, and not to worry about it!
My oldest daughter’s Kindergarten teacher had a stuffed bear named “Terrific Teddy”. Each Friday, a child was selected to take Terrific Teddy home with them for the weekend. The parents had to keep a “journal” on Terrific Teddy’s time, then the story was read on Monday to the whole class. It was fun to see what all people did over the weekend, the places they went, etc., and took Terrific Teddy along. When my middle daughter was in Kindergarten with the same ah-mazing teacher, SHE got to bring Terrific Teddy home! It was a neat idea, and Terrific Teddy never “died” or had to be replaced like the pet fish my brother kept over the summer!
Shannon is caring for the class pet which is good. However, hampster stories usually end up in disaster in tge media. Either the hampster will escape or it will die or somehow disappear and Tony and Brad will have to make a trip to the pet store to get a replacement.
If Shannon goes to the same school and class as Calvin, maybe she will get to hear that all-time classic story “Hamster Huey and the Gooey Kablooie”? :D
This week’s story is dry! Let something happen, like TJ or Brad accidentally stepping on hamster or the landlord knocking on the door and saying, “No pets allowed!”
I feel in the minority, but I like Shannon. I hope for one day Brad and Toni adopt her and let her have a somewhat more stable childhood. I always see her as an innocent child, attempting to use a childs logic dealing with the constant abandonment issues stemming from her flaky father and unknown missing mother.
Wow! I think I am now finally able to be back to commenting! A good day for me!

I think this “Shannon” arc is thus far turning out to be a really GOOD Shannon arc, IMO. I like how she is taking responsibility here, and her over worried expression to take back care of the hamster is both humorous and “real” for a kid her age. I think there is a lot of promise for this week!
I spent a few minutes seeing the comics from the last couple of weeks too…. boy, did I miss a lot of good commenting fun I would have liked to participate in!

As in, whenever she shows, an army of commentators calling her “Ann Eiffel in training.”
She’s just a kid. And perhaps the most innocent character in this strip.

Still seems like a Sunday foible, with the hamster being lost in the house the hilarity ensues part, but that can’t be the story for a weekly arc.
