So, everything happened just as everyone suggested yesterday. Oh hum. So what happens Saturday? Either Bernice turns around and sees the entire DeGroot family blurry-eyes wondering what she doing up so early. Or, and this is the better joke, Bernice sits down with her tea and toast and fall asleep, not waking up until Nancy slides breakfast in front of her.

We’ve sure come a long way since the drawn-out mystery of who Dez was. Now she’s apparently been sent off to “former character land” to join Crystal, Knute, Delta, Aaron Hill, Rosa, Mr. Fogerty, Miss Phelps, Quill, Dirk, and most recently Pru.

I suppose we should be preparing ourselves for the eventual departure of Zebo, Jack, and Tara.

Bernice’s discomfort is making me uncomfortable. Must face the truth. Luann and Bernice have not made the transition from cute little moppets to interesting young women. Now, Gunther and Bets supply the action, and Tiff vs. Ann showcases Tiffany’s struggle for maturity while trying to hold on to her sexy image. Head’s up, Greg, it’s getting very crowded on the back burner.

I’m enjoying this. I am! Not to get philosophical over here, but it occurs to me that we got so wound up with all the Tiffany/Ann drama that we’ve quite forgotten how to enjoy the tiny trials of life. Like trying not to wake up the rest of the house when we’re an early riser. It seems to me that real life is the same. If we don’t have some godawful drama to keep us “entertained,” then life seems boring. Whatever happened to just enjoying the sweet moments of life? We don’t have to be “on edge” every second of every day. Not even in a comic strip.

I still say that the majority of folks can and would sleep through the common noises of another person in the household doing normal, routine things, so Bernice really doesn’t have to worry.

The toaster noise (a bit louder, but still nothing ear-shattering) and the whistle of the kettle (the loudest noise so far, but IMO still just a normal sound that most would/could sleep through in a bedroom that is probably pretty far from the kitchen) are both the loudest noises thus far…. but even these, I know I personally could easily sleep through, and I suspect most could as well.

Even though it was pretty obvious these would be the noises that surprised Bernice today… to me they are the weakest in terms of comedic value this week. I think Bernice being hypersensitive to the noises at the moment would have easily predicted the tea kettle noise at least. Not all toasters are big “boing” noisy, so that could be one she overlooked.

    * * * * Still, for me the BIG PICTURE of this week is that this really helps to show that Bernice is a caring and sensitive young lady who tries mightily to do the right thing…. so much so that she often has her efforts actually backfire on her. But…. her heart is in the right place.

I think it would be delightfully funny if tomorrow’s installment shows that Bernice somehow realizes all her machinations at being quiet as a mouse were for naught…. because everyone in the house already had gotten up and left for the day.

I think it is ok to do an arc on Bernice but we need to spice it up. How about a steamy romance with Bernice and TJ. Maybe we can learn more about him and make Bernice happy for a change. I remember she liked a guy in a wheelchair that she met working in a bookstore. I think Ann fired him which ended his story line. Ann seems to have her fingers in slot of pies.

Abraham Lincoln said something once that no matter what one does publicly some will like it and others will not. I think this week is important to show how caring and concerned Bernice really is, in a funny, could happen to me sort of way. Personally it is tiresome to read how booored people are, or wishing for something else. If something else was drawn there would be just as many booored and why don’t we see more Luann, and we never hear about Bernice, she must have died or something. I like to let the story guide me here, not any picayune impatience.

It’s been a while since I’ve lived up to my display name and gone out on a limb with a guess at what happens next, so here goes: Later this morning (Luanniverse time), one of the DeGroots will ask Bernice about how she’s doing (did she sleep well? is everything comfortable? …), and Bernice will politely reply to the effect that all is well and not say anything about the feelings of awkwardness we’ve seen her exhibit in the last few days (our time).

That prediction notwithstanding, I expect that Bernice will quickly learn to fit into the household and that we’ll be done with the “unsure how to behave in her new living situation” theme by the end of this week—or next week at the latest. If learning “how we do things here” would require conversations that we don’t see on-panel, I’ll just assume that the needed conversations take place off-panel, at least unless and until we see Bern commit some faux pas that proves otherwise.

Such pointless paranoia. I hope Bernice ends up saying, “Sorry I made so much noise this morning” and the Groots say “What noise?” I also hope this storyline never, ever continues past tomorrow, because it makes NO sense. It’s as if Bernice forgot she’s ever met this family before, and they’re total strangers to her. She’s surely had sleepovers with Luann as a kid. This friendship is doomed if this has gotta make sense. Why don’t these writers ever write stuff that makes sense? It’s so funny!
