I have to agree with Earl on this one. I love my dog but I don’t want her on the table at dinner time or any other time for that matter.

I agree: Cats should beg from the floor. And strangely enough, our kitty princess has actually been trained to that. Partly because she really doesn’t want  human food except for whipped cream, a small bit of deli turkey or blue cheese.

Cats on anything other than the floor, lap or outside is nasty. Had a cousin whose house will have to be completely razed because of her cats. Was there only once and will never go back- the smell of “cat” eveywhere was sickening. Plus they were allowed on the dining table, fridge, etc. YUK!

We trained our dog to stay off of furniture and the kitchen counters and he always obeyed as long as we were watching him.

so, the cat rummages through the kitty litter , covering up her droppings

and then jumps on the kitchen table WHILE they’re eating?

Opal crossed the line on that one.

My daughter was able to train her cat to stay off the kitchen counters, but not the table. We tried everything. We finally found something that work. We covered the table with so much junk that NO ONE could use the table. The cat stopped jumping up on the table. When we move to our new house, we are going to scour the internet for other suggestions because I would LIKE to eat at the table without the cat on it. I HATE the thought of a cat having been where food I eat has been prepared. I was a one house where cats were all over the kitchen counters and dining room tables. I never ate there again.

Reminds me of a convo reported by Georgia Dunn of Breaking Cat News. Their 4 real-life cats “aren’t allowed” on the kitchen table either, but they get up there anyway…

Man: “What are the cats doing on the kitchen table?”

    Woman: “Paying half the mortgage.”

    =^..^=

I’ve had cats for more than 50 years. Earl is right. They do NOT belong on the dinner table during meals.

That being said, I have never been able to figure out how to keep them off of it while I’m not home or in the other part of the house, but it wipes down easily before we sit down to eat. Same with the kitchen counters. As long as they stay off while I am preparing food (after I have wiped the counters) then I don’t worry about it.

I had a cat who would sit in her own chair and wait for leftovers. She never got actually on the table. That said, is there anything Earl does as an adult homeowner on his own besides nap? Opal takes him sandwiches on request on a TV tray, cooks all the meals, does all the laundry, and he sleeps. But for once, Opal did go too far with the cat. Roscoe should learn to sit quietly in a chair and hope for leftovers. He always looks willing to eat anything. Beagle?

I’ve never liked casseroles either so I have one Mexican casserole which we both love. It really takes me more time to make any dish with lots of ingredients mixed together than a stir fry or a baked anything. Our cats have never shared a dinner table with us. If they tried, they’d be knocked right off the table.

Yeah, I’m with Earl on this one. Animals do not belong on eating surfaces. Ew. Just Ew. I have a friend whose cats are allowed on the countertops, but they wipe them down with clorox before they prepare food. I still say NO.

That’s just gross. I’ve had a lot of cats but two places they were never allowed was on food preparation surfaces (kitchen counters) and the table. My mother was anti-cat-anywhere and I believed her until the day I walked into the kitchen and she was making a salad with one of the cats sitting next to the bowl, supervising. Now I never believe her, no matter how much she says she hates cats.

Earl is lazy except when Opal, who apparently can’t drive, makes him take her to the fabric store. I just realized I don’t like these stereotypical old people. They don’t seem to like each other much either.
