A Disappointing end to a promising two weeks. I was hoping for Bernice to have a break-through in her obsession with Jack. But no, she’s just going to sound-proof her room.
Ahh, the little Psych major is anticipating a wild, thumping, Id driven, unleashed ego, oxygen gasping trip into dreamland. Isn’t that just the cutest thing?
Bernice. Instead of worrying about your nightly whispering, go home and have it out with your family about moving back home. Your family can find a way to accommodate everyone. Get to know Ben and your step nephews. Just take all those pillows and go home.
Oh yes, she’s not that kind of girl. Only bad girls dream about a guy they’re attracted to come over and have a dumb conversation with them. Definitely worth postponing the whole brother plotline.
Next week, Bernice goes to Walmart and buys a cheap stereo. From now on, it plays all night long, every night serving to jam / mask other sounds that may happen to emanate from the room. That Bernice is one smart cookie.
Luann is honoring Bern’s privacy by revealing that she can hear “pillow talk” through the wall. I wonder if she would have made the same reveal if Gunther was sharing the room and invited Bets over for study sessions. }8^ )
Bernice doth protest too much, as evidence by her attempts to deaden the sounds from her room. She has found a new interest besides Monstro, and, her studies. The “Bodice Ripper” is letting Bernice’s subconscious out, where she finds herself at least in lust for Jack.
I always thought it wouldn’t take much to unleash the smoldering, sensuous women lurking beneath Bern’s uptight public face. Kind of like wimpy Bruce Banner turning into the Hulk when provoked.
Bernice… there’s nothing wrong with having hot dreams. It’s natural and you can’t control it. What a terrible psychology student! She really seems hopeless!
“Good girls go to heaven, bad girls go everywhere.” Helen Gurley Brown
“It’s the good girls who keep diaries; the bad girls never have the time.” Tallulah Bankhead
“I wonder why it is, that young men are always cautioned against bad girls. Anyone can handle a bad girl. It’s the good girls men should be warned against.” David Niven
We have not left Jack and Ben yet, this is all part of the development of a fuller (I hope) personality for Bernice, wiser, less constrained, and happily receiving love and satisfaction from someone she deliberately pursued, while at the same time not being so anxious about tying up the loose ends in her family. This was not the fault of each sibling, Bernice should be the one who ties the knot.
:-) Luann’s knowing remarks are funny. Wonder what kind of girl Bernice is referring to? Not sure I know of anyone who can control their dreams. I can’t even remember most of mine and the ones I do remember are just weird. Her trying to muffle any future dream talking is hilarious! ;-))
Luann is at least doing Bern a favor by letting her know that she could be heard talking in her sleep. But Luann wants the juicy details just like she wanted them from Gunther and I think Bern knows that. If I were Bern I’d say ‘go have your own lustful dream and ponder the details of it’. Maybe the fun part for us is that in saying “…i’m not that kind of girl…”, you figure the story might take her in just the opposite direction.
As a noise and vibration engineer, I can tell you this… What Bernice is doing will not be effective. You would have to cover the entire wall with Sonex foam which provides a decent amount of sound absorption, isolation and damping… however it will only work for the mid/high frequency range. The wavelength of frequencies below 500 Hz will pass right through it… If you don’t know what Sonex looks like, Google it.…
Bernice has shown time and time again, that she has no sense of humor about herself. But, at this point in time, it must be granted that her home situation (parents house + Ben) is a mess in her mind.
This comic is an example of why it is a really good idea to move away from home. One needs new friends that are good for you, not just together by circumstance.
I was thinking a couple of blankets spread and hanging with an air gap between them and them and the wall. Make sound go from air to blanket to air to blanket to air to wall to air to Luann. Oh, and a quietly playing radio next to the wall might help as well.
Or, she could pretend to be asleep and start calling out passionately Elwood’s name.
IIRC, Tom Sawyer was talking in his sleep. He found out about it, and also that his brother was listening. So, when preparing for bed, Tom would fake a toothache, and tie a cloth around his head to hold his chin in place. But, his brother would slip the cloth out of place to listen.
“I’m not that kind of girl.” What a dated, stupid thing to say. Bore-nice is even controlling about her dreams. How could Jack find her appealing? Also, if Jack pursues Luann and asks her on a date, she is now in a dilemma because she knows Bore-nice has the hots for him.
Luann just wants to enjoy details about other peoples love and sex life rather than work to have one of her own. She wants everything(education, love, success) to just fall in her lap. Bernice is willing to work for what she wants; bernice wants a mix of brains, brawn, and emotion and she has yet to find any man with this mix. She found it in Gunther but he’s taken. So she has to keep searching.Bern, why don’t you tell jack how you feel and see where it goes. what have you got to lose?

Most girls are “that kind of girl”, at least sometimes. You can’t really control what you dream.

Still looks like Luann is needling Bernice.
(Incoming “Luann-hater” comments in 3…2…1)
But seriously, what’s missing is knowing whether Luann is trying to be helpful – or just a pest.
Pillows against the wall suggest this arc is coming to rest.
Along with hopes that we might get into the Ben mystery.
