For a club that’s against girls, the members sure brag a lot about themselves.

I’ve worked in places where they thought job titles were worth as much as a raise. And that meetings were actually productive.

I didn’t work in such places for long though.

calvin sucks at maths (well he is creative if not theoretically correct) but he is cognoscenti about literature and art it seems, a boy misunderstood…

Those rare moments when Calvin talks directly to the audience. It’s funny looking back at how often that happens (often when Cavin narrates someone like Mo: “He’s not smart, but he’s streetwise. That means he knows what street he lives on”).

I made some comments in two of last week’s sessions which seem to have been misunderstood by some commentators so I would like to clarify them:

I commentated that Bill Watterson has said three times to my knowledge that he didn’t consider Hobbes to be part of Calvin’s imagination. Someone replied that Watterson may not have considered Hobbes to be part of Calvin’s imagination but – by showing that other characters see Hobbes as a stuffed doll – he portrayed him as such. I disagree. I certainly started off assuming that Hobbes was part of Calvin’s imagination but I started to doubt that about four years before I read that Watterson didn’t see Hobbes as imaginary. This is because Hobbes is sometimes shown doing things when Calvin isn’t around, talking to us about Calvin or making comments which Calvin doesn’t understand.

On Friday, someone said that most of the characters in the strip hate Calvin and I replied that Mom and Dad love Calvin and Mom often shows her love while Dad also shows it but much less often. I added that Moe and Rosalyn are the only characters who are really mean to Calvin. Someone spoke up for Rosalyn and implied that Calvin bullies her! I’m aware that Calvin unwittingly brought Rosalyn on himself by being such a brat that no one else will baby sit him but he never bullies anyone and certainly couldn’t bully a teenager. Most of the Rosalyn story arcs have her, a teenager, threatening a six-year-old child but she never threatens him in front of his parents as that might jeopardise her role as baby sitter. Rosalyn is often angry will Calvin whereas Calvin is often terrified of Rosalyn.

It is true that Calvin sometimes takes revenge on Rosalyn and that he may have learned his tactics from Moe. When he stole her study notes and tried to get more favourable treatment, someone said, “How cute! Calvin’s learned extortion at such a young age!” I then replied that he probably learned it from Moe but may have learned it from Rosalyn herself
