One of my favorite fiction scenes: They guy walks in to find the interviewer sitting at a desk with the drapes open on behind her shining directly into the face of whoever would sit in the uncomfortable chair. He turns the tables completely: Shuts the drapes, spins a comfortable chair near the desk, and turns on the lamp so they’re both comfortable. And says, “Now we can accomplish something if you WANT to.”
In real negotiations both sides want something, and are trying to get it with the best terms for themselves. He has stated he won’t negotiate. Turn around and walk out. He wants something from you.
One of my favorite lines in the musical Little Me is delivered by rich banker Mr. Pinchley, who is the “meanest, nastiest, and stingiest man in town” who refuses to help the poor. Pinchley, when told someone asking for a loan says, “Bring him in. I haven’t had a good grovel and beg for weeks!”
Bitterly ironic today. Too often the situation, whether at executive level or just in the average office pool. Obviously his honor, the great flatulence demands at least the outward signs of something he will never earn.
.. in this day and age? Not so much. There are 5 other places willing to give me better wages (or work/life style).. I’m not begging for anything. I could give a rat’s butt what the boss wants.

This just makes it easier to plant the listening devices to blackmail the CEO later

My boss once told me that I got a raise I didn’t deserve. I told him to keep it until I did. Turns out it was a cost of living increase.

Given today’s labor situations, the scene is a bit reversed.
