Really? Are the horses and the hens going to deal with any extinct-level asteroids heading for Earth in the future after humans are gone? Or are they just all doomed dinosaurs V2.0?
Several documentaries on the recovery going on in the exclusion zone around Chernobyl have found the area teeming with wildlife that is thriving and multiplying without humans around. Also, back in 2009 the History channel had a series of documentaries called “Life After People” where they speculated what would happen if humans just vanished. The consensus was that most domesticated animals would turn feral (assuming they were not trapped inside buildings), and wildlife would rebound from near extinction. The programs featured segments showing where this is occurring now in abandoned places, such as the Chernobyl exclusion zone.
According to some, cockroaches will likely survive where humans won’t, but then they’ll eventually turn on themselves and self-exterminate due to lack of other food sources.
@nicka93 and sandpiper – Sorry, cockroaches have been here for millions of years, are you saying they are dependent on humanity’s messy kitchens to survive now?
Apparently it’s almost impossible to extinguish life completely once it forms on a planet. Earth has had five major extinctions and numerous minor ones that can be tracked over it’s four plus billion year history. Those life forms that have been wiped out are always replaced by the evolution of others which are better suited to the new conditions.
Most, if not all, previous extinction events were the result of an external cataclysmic event. Homo sapiens is the only species that seems bent on extinguishing itself. Perhaps Mark Twain was correct when he mused that he often thought God created man only because He was disappointed in the monkey.
My immediate reaction was to agree with Lucy but there is actually a use for humanity (or some other technologically adept species) in the medium-far future.
Everyone knows that in 5,000,000,000 years the Sun will expand enough to swallow the Earth. What is less known is that the Sun has been increasing its radiation output ever since its formation ………….. and in only 100,000,000 years the seas will evaporate. Life will become impossible long before then.
A species with sufficiently advanced technology could tow Earth into a larger, cooler orbit.
After humans, it would be interesting to see how remaining life evolves. It won’t go back to prehistoric sizes, because the oxygen content on the atmosphere is lower
Ouch! A little too on-the-nose. It is starting to look more-and-more like the only way to keep Earth habitable for humans is if something terrible destroys most of the humans. The unfortunate part of that is we seem to be relying on that solution, even arranging for it to happen, as Plan A.
When I consider the exponential explosion of technology together with its application to ever-safer environments and devices and predictive A.I., I believe the future will approach our understanding of God. And in fact, the future is already here in the vast number of habitable planets that are billions of years ahead of us. Maybe until we reach that point, we must still rely on prayer, for those problems we can’t fix ourselves.
a bit of over generalisation isn’t it? The problem with human are certainly cause by those human who craves power like flies to dungs. most of us are perfectly contented to while our time on cat pictures and fly swatting.
Evolution is driven by problems and will continue to function, with or without humans. All living things are born to die, whether or not humans continue after your death should be of no interest to you Extinction of a species is no big deal. Evolution will continue to mold species to fit the environmental problems they face.
