When I mentioned the pilot episode of anime Clannad yesterday, even Tomoya couldn’t keep up with Akio’s as well as Sanae’s humor (calling him Daiuchuu Ginga and Tomoya Okazaki Eternal/Ethanol). He confessed to Nagisa that he never thought there’d be families who getting along so well whereas Nagisa says she thinks it’s pretty normal.
This kind of reminds me of the movie “Meet the Parents” (2000) where Ben Stiller meets his girlfriend’s parents for the first time, and it turns out dad, Robert De Niro, is an overprotective father, and who also happens to be a retired CIA agent who gives Stiller the third degree including even a lie detector test!
If they are going to do the Spanish Inquisition routine Rhetta’s dad needs a red Cardinal’s outfit. Poor Michael was caught by surprise. . . “Nobody Expects The Spanish Inquisition!!!”
In my very localized growing-up years, I don’t remember ever seeing pizza. Never knew it existed until I got to college. Didn’t actually taste any until well after I graduated.
I would say Married with Children did a good job at displaying the double standard fathers had with their children dating. One time Al comes downstairs late at night and sees Bud making out. It is dark, so all he sees is the making out. He grabs Bud by the scruff of his neck and throws him out the door, yelling “I told you losers to stay away from my daughter!”. Then the doorbell rings and he sees it is Bud. Al turns on the lights to see the girl on the couch is not his daughter, but Bud’s date, then Al lightens up and congratulates Bud for finding an attractive girl. :P
So Rhetta takes after her mother. Why does a father have the need to play a cop and interrogate their daughter’s dates? Don’t they know teenage boys know how to act polite and say the right things but aren’t like that outside of their date’s home? Interrogating them doesn’t reveal anything about them they don’t want to reveal to the fathers. Have a casual conversation, be friendly, and not about their daughters. They’d draw more information about them that way.

With Rhetta’s mom’s hands all over him, Michael might prefer an interrogation.

True. It isn’t an interrogation. It’s a job interview. Even if you ace it, you could lose everything.

Not michael, but if you get a girlfriend that is 12 – 18 years younger than you. Than you will have a lot more in common with her parents!

And this is the last time we will see Rhetta’s parents, although they will occasionally be mentioned.
