Have you seen what the big stores are pushing? Menards has life sized animatronics worthy of a Hollywood production.

All Hallows Eve existed as a holiday in cultures around the world long before being incorporated into Christianity as the day before All Saints and All Souls Days.

We have this same conversational form at my house. She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed asks for my preference of two options. I select one, and then she says, “Really? That one?” oy…

The holiday is actually All Saints Day, Halloween is All Saints Eve. Originally it was All Hallows Day and All Hallows Eve.Then it became Hallowe’en and the finally Halloween. It IS a real church holy day. In fact, the existence of the eve means the holiday came into being when Christians were still using the Jewish dusk to dusk day calendar, prior to 300 CE.

Why did Janis even bother to ask? To perpetuate the myth that Arlo had a choice? He knows better.

We will be in an adult RV park in Pensacola on Halloween so I’m going out to Wally or Publix and buying a bag of mini chocolate bars and just sit and eat them.

As far as I am concerned, Halloween celebrates creativity and dressing up in costumes. My brother’s family spends a month turning their home into a haunted house each year. My teenagers value Halloween far more than Christmas.

I don’t ask. I just decorate. However, we have no trick or treaters around here so the decorations are just for me these days and I don’t go overboard anymore.

Hallo- / Hollow- Same thing. Both mean “holy.” Government or business holidays aren’t the only kind that exist. Of course in the UK “holiday” can mean "vacation"—hard to that with official approval.

Whenever my wife gives me a choice of two options, for anything at all, I’ll just pick one at random and it’s 100% guaranteed that she will say she’s inclined to the other one. Then my standard response is, yes, that would probably be better. After that, my obligation to participate in further ruminations is fulfilled.

The most tasteful Halloween decoration is no decoration, and if you have kids craving Halloween treats that is only because YOU taught them to expect them.

For many Irish and people descendant from Celtic people, it’s a real holiday. Not to mention for Pagans and Witches.

October 31, to folks of the Lutheran faith, is Reformation Day, the date when Martin Luther posted his “95 Theses” in order to generate discussion about certain ways in which the Pope and the Catholic Church of that time were misrepresenting the Gospel message, with the hope that these discussions could lead to a time when the Catholic Church would “reform” and reconnect with original Biblical tenets. Happy Reformation Day, folks!

I have seen a lot of surprisingly large displays, surprisingly early, but I don’t think I’d call any of them either whimsical or tasteful. Well, one or two have whimsical elements, but the effect gets lost in the sheer amount and kitschiness.

I think my favorite decoration this year for halloween had two skeletons sitting at a table on the porch, with cons of beer. One had his feet up on the table, smoking a cigar.I think my second favorite had two skeletons dressed in overalls, playing violins.
