Yeah I’m with Nate on this one. I used to live in a city with one of the more famous (but overblown) donut shops and they don’t charge nearly that much.
I am in my 60s and my honeymoon cost over $1500 in 1981 (if I remember correctly, but that number is not far off). The church (for 200 people) was $100. The reception dinner cost around $3-$4 per person. The same price as a donut today apparently.
But $40 was about the cost of a single night in a hotel room.
Kansas City, ca. 1955: Doughnuts: $0.05 and coffee might have been the same or $0.10. I could pick up pop bottles beside 50th street and support myself pretty well.
I had no idea the cost of donuts was up so high. Dunkin’s website doesn’t even list prices. (“If you have to ask, you can’t afford it?”) I linked to Door Dash and the listed cost was $1.98 per donut. Good grief. Last time I ate donuts was in the late 1980’s, and it was about $5 for a dozen with a coupon. I would have expected around $10-$15 now, but it’s $24. Apparently, at a bakery, it really will run $30-$40. I share Nate’s grandad’s shock.
This one reminds me of how there was a trend for “designer” cupcakes a while ago, and in some shops you could get a cupcake that looked like a mini birthday cake, what with all kinds of miniature decorations. They used to cost up to $10.00 each. Then this trend slowly died out…
I can see a “designer” donut in some upscale shop selling for $3.50, but it has to have some really nice decorations.
Just for comparison, since we are talking about prices: my favorite donut is the Polish one called: pączek
(Here’s the background info for you: What does pączki mean in Polish?
Pączki (Polish: [ˈpɔnt͡ʂkʲi]; singular: pączek [ˈpɔnt͡ʂɛk]; Kashubian: pùrcle; Old Polish and Silesian: kreple) are filled doughnuts found in Polish cuisine.)
About twenty (20) years ago, when we started shopping at our Polish bakery, their donuts were 50 cents each, and sometimes they had them at 4 for $1.00. Then the price started creeping up to 79 cents, then 99 cents, and today it is at $1.99 each.
Since retirement, both of us are on a fixed income, so we don’t buy those donuts as often as we did long time ago…
The only thing that could possibly justify that price is if these are the best donuts in the world, or they have some super fancy concoction that is expensive itself.
This comic is absolutely true to life, in all aspects.
I have actually bought expensive doughnuts like that at some of the excellent local bakeries around here. They were so rich that you could eat only half of one and still be satisfied. Plus, they were much, much bigger than the ones from DD or KK.

Well, 3.50 × 12 = 42, so they’re not ripping them off by selling 12 for 40.

With those prices I think I’m late for the door. I don’t care if they call it designer or not. It won’t taste any different.

Heck, designer COOKIE companies charge that for a cookie these days. I’d prefer a donut any day.

Woohoo! At $40/dozen you’re getting just over half a donut for free if you paid $3.50 for 12. What a deal!
