I write devotionals on a Christian page on Facebook, Be the Light. Before I post them, my younger daughter reads them. She calls herself my copy editor.
I get the joke, but I’m also reminded of a post I saw (on tumblr, I think) from someone who does critiques for a living. The big thing isn’t just saying “Loved this, hated this part, LOATHED this, ADORED that” because everyone’s taste is different, it’s asking good and useful questions, especially if you found something unclear.
I promise to tell the truth, the whole truth (up to the point where you won’t feel offended) and nothing but the truth (up to the point where the truth may hurt you … and you hurt me).
Find some small typos and correct them to show that you read it and than do read it and give that honest aswer. Beans and franks everyday won’t be all that bad…….
I once beta read a novel my cousin had written. She made it very clear she wanted constructive criticism and that saying “Everything’s great” would be a colossal waste of time.

Tell her to ask you if she looks fat. It will be a lot less painful.

Just not fair. Never ask for an opinion about your writing from someone who has something to lose by telling you the truth.

“Honest is as honest is allowed”…
One of my favorite bits from “The Big Bang Theory”:
Bernadette: Well, is there anything about me you’re keeping inside?
Howard: I’m not answering that. It’s a trap.
Bernadette: So there are things you don’t like.
Howard: And here I am in the trap. You just keep talking, I’m gonna chew my leg off.
Bernadette: Just tell me one thing that bothers you, and I promise I won’t get mad.
Howard: Okay. The truth is, sometimes, you’re just too beautiful.
(Howard shakes his head angrily for one second)
Bernadette: (she is now very cross) Oh, Howie, be serious.
Howard: Okay, okay. I really don’t like how your wings poke me when we sleep ’cause you’re an angel.
Bernadette: Okay, fine, maybe it was a bad idea.

You do an author no favor by telling her the writing is great when it’s not.
