If you have five piles of snow and you use two to make a snowmen, how many piles do you have left?

How many snowmen can we build with 1-1/2 feet of snow in a 6×6ft space, given a melting rate of 0.5 inches of snow per day?

It’s the obvious choice: if the snow melts, then you have to stop playing and get back to your homework eventually; if it doesn’t, then tomorrow’s going to be another snow day!!

I couldn’t enjoy the snow knowing I had homework hovering over my head. Calvin, get your homework done, then you can enjoy the whole day without worrying about school tomorrow.

I have recently started watching a US animated series called Craig of the Creek on ITV 2 here in the UK at 6.00 am. Today’s episode was called “Snow Day”. Craig was watching the TV news hoping for a snow day. In his imagination, he was called up into a TV game show called “The Ice Is Right”. He got to spin the wheel but found that instead of winning a snow day he had won a “Two Hour Delay”. Craig and his friends Kelsey and JP used the two hours to try to create a magic spell to create a snow day.

Some of you may scoff at me for still enjoying cartoons on TV but not all of you do. A commentator on one of my other favourite strips “Red and Rover” told me, “I think it’s wonderful that you still enjoy cartoons while in your fifties. Stay young.”

Calvin, don’t do this to yourself! I just had a dream about having pending assignments hanging over my head, and I’ve been out of school for 11 years!

I’m with Calvin. If life gives you snow, don’t waste it inside. I think the reason Calvin & Hobbes appeals to us adults is that we WISH we could be that irresponsible, so we vicariously enjoy watching him be irresponsible for us.

I was an incorrigible procrastinator as a kid. One Sunday evening I asked my parents to help me with a school project (make a diorama based on a book). My father asked me when it was due; I said, “Tomorrow”. He asked how long I’ve known about it. I said that it’s been a week or so. Dad said, “You got yourself into this; you get yourself out.” Ever since, whenever I feel the urge to procrastinate, I hear my father’s rich, deep voice saying those words.

Calvin apparently lived in the “snow belt” on the east side of Cleveland. Those of us on the sheltered west side were most likely reading this comic with envy after our school was not on the closings list.
