Nobody is “stranded”, never was. They got an extended high-paying temporary job on the ISS until the next crew rotation. The ISS has enough spacecraft docked which can be used as “lifeboats” (although some ad hoc modification would be needed) to evacuate everyone in an emergency.
3 months later, all the astronauts were killed when they attempted to build a raft out of discarded space station panels and “row their way back to Earth.”
