Liz has a point. Love can easily turn to hate, but platonic friendship just devolves into—indifference.

Fifteen years after being widowed, I married someone who had been a platonic friend since the summer after high school graduation. Romantic love didn’t develop until a couple of years before.

Being the right person is more important than finding the right person

From Lynn’s Comments: This punch line became a title for one of the books. Whenever we released a collection, I’d go thorough the strips that would be included and find a good comment to use on the cover. I was happy to find this one. After choosing a title, it was then a challenge to decide how to draw up the cover illustration!

Just the other day I read “If you split up and are able to remain friends, you are either still in love or you never were.” I don’t recall exactly where I saw that, but after thinking about it a bit, I believe they may be correct.

Actually, it’s petty jealousy that screws everything up.

When I was 14 I liked a boy, Chris. We dated for a short time; we didn’t “click” but decided to stay friends. He was one of my dearest and closest friends all through high school. Since he didn’t have any sisters I filled that role for him. When he met a girl in high school I couldn’t imagine anyone more perfect for him & attended his inevitable engagement party with pride and love. They remained married until he sadly passed away in 2021. His wife & I are still good friends.

Elly sure looks thoughtful. She should be relieved that a child Liz’s age has found a way around pointless adolescent drama.

Actually, it’s usually sex that messes* things up.

I’m not sure if I could swallow anything found in a box of cookies call “Choko Chunx”….it just doesn’t sound appetizing.

No real comment to be made. But thinking WAY back to my high school years, when two who were “going steady” broke up they avoided each other like the plague.

It does, really. Thankfully I’ve grown enough to decide that I don’t NEED a relationship. If something happens, cool, but I wasted too much time bellyaching over being single.

I had friends that wanted to date me. I thought about it and told them our friendship was too special to risk screwing it up. We stayed friends for years until college and careers parted us. Caught up with them years later – had a nice drink and visit – still friends. Priceless
