In the original from 1996, the characters were not wearing ski helmets and John was wearing a Santa hat, without which the joke is little less evident.
Give me the wildest, most mis-matched color scheme you can if I go skiing. This way others can find me if I run into a snow bank or face plant on my way down the hill!
I went to college in Vermont. Needless to say, I did a lot of skiing while there. It was an unwritten rule that if you were a good skier, you never wore fancy designer ski wear or even matching outfits!
The grubbier and more comfortable your apparel was, the better. You were there to ski not show off. You spent your money on a good set of skis and boots not on fashion.
Right there with ya, Darryl. I ski in Carhartt’s, jacket, vest and overalls, nothing matches except the logo. I am warm, dry, comfy and having the time of my life. Don’t care at all what anybody think : ) Carhartt is incredibly durable tho a bit pricey but nowhere near the cost of some of these truly hideous ski outfits that I have seen lately. PJs indeed!!
Ah yes, the everlasting fight between function and fashion. One is about getting the job done, and the other is about looking good, and we can all tell which camp Elizabeth is in.

Speak for yourself, Elizabeth. You look like you’re skiing in your pajamas.

Doesn’t matter what your outfit looks like as everyone looks the same when covered with snow.

He won’t buy new ski stuff til these things fall apart. As he says he is warm and comfortable. Dad’s are just like that. Mine was.

I couldn’t care less about fashion, I wear what I feel most comfortable in, if anyone doesn’t like what I’m wearing, tough cookies!

I think John’s clothing matches perfectly … warm gloves, warm jacket and warm pants.

Fashion points don’t count in the olympics for skiing, just ice skating

Normal men, unlike women, refuse to be beholden to what other people think they “should” be wearing.

The helmets are new. In the original, which was 01-01-96, John and Liz wore stocking caps. I am sure Liz’s cap matched her outfit then too.

There comes a time in life when you don’t care what others think about you—if you’re lucky enough to have that realization.

Whereas Liz’s outfit clearly qualifies her as the ultimate fashion plate.
