What he needs is closure. Rhetta dumped him for another guy. He is struggling with finding closure on the break up. He likely thinks it was something he did and that it is not about him being away at college. He will find his closure when he sees Rhetta again when he goes home for the Spring Break or the Summer Break…..or meet another girl before then. The best cure for the break-up is meeting and falling for someone else. Suddenly the ex is in the rearview and forgotten.

Dear Rhetta,

My landlady almost knocked me out because I forgot my key. She thought I was a burglar. I miss you.

If THAT night out on the town didn’t budge Michael out of his Rhetta-funk, it looks like he’s going to stay there until Spring Thaw.

They haven’t made moves on Kit and Jodi? What’s wrong with them—hormone shortage??

I was about to type a criticism of Michael before I recognized my 19-yr old self. It took me an embarrassingly long time to get over her.

Dear Rhetta—-

I’ll be having nightmares for weeks.Please buy me a teddy bear

He should substitute “Dear Rhetta” with “Dear Ndugu”. (About Schmidt reference)

Besides, wouldn’t he be more focused on sticking his head out the window and yelling:

Michael: Farley!! Oh, Farley! Where are you? Yoo hoo, Farley!

I hope he’s writing a final goodbye letter.

Time is the answer, as the days go by you find yourself laughing and smiling again. And one day, 10 years later, you find the world didn’t end, but you have to live to discover that.

A poetic goodbye could be written nicely into a book later. Good to get the feelings out, just dont hit send.
