School terms are three months, So she’s going to be paying about $1,000 a month for a shared room. She may get a better deal looking for something off-campus, as I don’t see how she’s gonna make that amount of money on a consistent basis working at the Fuse. She should pay attention in her business finance classes.
$3010 as a fee just to switch rooms?!! Looks like Mooney University is soaking the students. Maybe Tiffany should wait until the end of the semester before she moves. It could be cheaper.
wow, she got $3700 and she’s handing $3010 over like "meh, whatever, pocket change. while last week she was in a panic over money. When she has money, she spends it like it’s burning a hole in her pocket. But in all fairness, most people when they come into a lot of $$$$ spend it fast.
Strikes me as a little ironic that a business major would lay out that kind of money so that she can discover that Lady MacBeth’s real problem was an advanced cigarette cough. We know that gay guys have Broadway musicals to aspire to, just as liberal arts professors have colleges to provide them with employment. But I don’t want my doctor singing in surgery or my banker appearing on Jeopardy.
The GOOD news is, Tiffany is paying for her new right away, as I HOPED!
The bad news is, the College is charging for a mid-term room switch? No big deal, as we’re not sure whether Tiffany’s old dorm is paid thru the end of the semester. (Probably not as she was desperate to sell stuff meet payments). But STILL. A “charge” for that??
But at least the room is paid for, during the upcoming term, and that’s one worry out of the way. NOW, she can REALLY concentrate on Her studies.
Two big questions remain:
1) What will Tiffany do with the remaining $690? Spend it foolishly or wisely put it in the bank?
2) “Who” or “what” will her new roommate be?
Oh, there is a third question: Tiffany is staying in her new dorm over Christmas break. Will she spend Christmas alone this holiday (Like she did during Thanksgiving) or accept an invitation to spend Christmas with friends?
Still, Tiffany pulled this off all on her own. Not a real surprise. She’s always been a Survivor.
I don’t get this. “Mid-term room switch”? Wasn’t her original room paid for until the end of the semester? If so, why did she need to switch rooms right now? If not, why the HECK does the university charge extra fees for mid-term room switches?
Are all students paying month-by-month, yet the university makes them sign a rental agreement for an entire semester, with penalties if they can’t make the monthly payment? Like signing a one year apartment rental lease?
If all of them ARE paying month-by-month, then why is Tiff asked to pay $3010 upfront? Wasn’t the same (paying it all upfront) requested when her Dad leased her original room? Something sounds fishy, and awfully exploitative, if that’s the case.
This is all very strange. This fee and the room charges should have been settled before she was halfway moved. And why wasn’t the room made for the whole semester since it’s on campus?? Come on Greg! This sequence isn’t complete. Pah phooey!
I know the last panel was drawn for emphasis, but pulling out cash? Tiffany should know better than that. And any proper administrator is immediately going to respond by saying, “We cannot accept cash. It must be a check.” Accepting cash, especially in large amounts like that, is a liability for everyone.
Not surprising. On the sheet of paper the financial officer is looking at, Greg is telling her to put the screws to Tiffany. Greg made it look like Tiffany was coming out ahead with what she got for her furniture, only to have most all of it taken away. And poor Tiffany in the last panel submits without complaint.
Ok, so now she has sold all her clothes and her furniture. Where will she get money in the future? I hope she will not start doing something illegal…..
I am kind of glad Tiff just whipped out the coin. When I was in University I recall that a few (not all) administration staff seemed to enjoy when a uni student ran into a Catch 22 that created a huge problem for someone around 20 or 22 or if their financial aid was delayed via red tape so that they could exert a bit of power or control…
Tiff has about $700 left but I suspect that will evaporate when Tiff is told her tuition is due for the spring semester and then the books will put her in the red. On the bright side I hope she gets Gunther’s gal as a roomie,, that would be cool but knowing Greg Evans she will probably get someone worse than Ann Eifell….
There is nothing more empowering than using your own money to pay your own way. ‘sniff" our once egotistical and self centered spoiled brat is growing up to be a force to be reckoned with…I am so ready for the Tiffany and Ann Awful smackdown, I’m in her corner.
What’s Greg’s point here? Tiff finagles a wad of cash from some junk peddler then gets ripped by some admin floozie. Tiff should be thinking of a better deal than she’s getting. The positive karma sleeping bag didn’t last long!
I’m supposing the rest of the week will see the rest of her nest egg vanish, “easy come, east go” fashion. Then what next? More Tiff misery?
Speaking of Tiff misery, it’s so pervasive here that it should have it’s own name. Tizzery?
Tiffany’s ability to negotiate the sale of her furniture has saved her from a situation that would have been really terrible. She accepts having to pay the fees with great maturity. I wonder if she will menage to put the remaining $690 aside or she will have to spend even those immediately.
“There are costs for a mid-term room switch” that plus the bill seems to indicate that the room is paid in advance… Also, I seem to remember that this drama was triggered by her daddy not wanting to pay for her room during the SUMMER period (which many students don’t stay for summer) – They just had Thanksgiving in the strip as well, so presumably they should be starting the winter term – which means daddy should have picked back up or it was included with her tuition (which he’s presumably still covering).
So which is it? Are we mid term, if so she’s owed a pro-rated refund for the remainder of her term. Or are we end of term, in which case the cost should be lower.
Also, what happened to Daddy just saying he wasn’t going to cover summer. Seems like it would be harder for Ann to convince him to pull the dorm room for regular year.
A lot of my students (especially those with brothers and sisters and an affinity for a certain school) had their parents buy a house, make payments while they were in school, then sell it when all had finished.
Tiffany needs to stop quoting that Tyke to Tycoon book and get a viable plan! She is surviving but barely. And once all her assets are gone I’m not sure what she will do.
Hmmm….. this seems too damn easy. Something must be amiss. Now that I have been diverted from thinking about having a pipe and grading a bunch of exams…..
a) I guess it could be a “calm before the storm” sort of day…. just a day of rather normal actions…… but….. nah… that doesn’t seem likely.
b) Perhaps the money the junkman gave Tiffany is counterfeit?!?!? Maybe tomorrow we will see the Dormitory Staff Person pull out one of those special “highlighter” pens, and run them across the bills…. and Tiffany will get locked up for passing off fake funds?!?!?!?!
c) Uh…hmmm….. I guess I am all out of ideas…. I guess I am feeling a bit foggy and unfocused…. hmmm… maybe it is due to I have not yet had coffee yet today as well.
It does seem that it is rather harsh to charge a FEE to move to another room in a dorm. Especially when a student is trying to downsize. I do not know of any schools that do that…. but I guess the fee is a minor point.
Trying to figure out what the school is charging three grand for here. If this is mid-term, was not her old man still paying at the beginning of the term, in which case, fees for the current term would have been paid in advance? Even with fees, she should have actually received money back if she’s going to a cheaper room. She’s in a dorm, not renting an apartment. I would surely hope that was to cover next term as well,
Quite a few of us are pointing out the ridiculous situation of a) Tiff moving out of a large room, and not getting any pro-rated credits b) Tiff being charged $3010 for… the remainder of the Fall semester? All of the upcoming Spring semester? Which one?
All of that could be fixed with a few simple dialog changes.
Panel 1: And with the $2000 pro-rated credit on your old room, plus fees for your mid-term room switch… (21 words to 18 words)
Panel 2: Your balance for the room from now through the end of the Spring semester is… $3010. (15 words to 16 words)
Even in institutions of so-called “higher learning”, it’s always about the bottom line. Reasonable of course, as it is a business, not a charity. But those who view such institutions through rose colored glasses would do well to keep that in mind.
Tiffany was living in a private premium suite. No roommates. The housing department has a empty suite that generates no revenue. Unless the money for the suite and tuition was paid with Tiffany (Daddy’s) credit card, her funds for a education will fall short.Tiffany needs a student loan quick. Or marry Gunther.
You know the on – line university where you are taking classes is a ripoff when you move your laptop computer to a smaller room in your house and they send you a bill for $3100 for the room change.
Okay… I know next to nothing about mid-change dorm fees. I’ve never been fortunate to have that kind of college experience. However, I have to say that I am very proud of Tiffany right now.
She missed out on thanksgiving dinner to avoid having to deal with more aggravation from Ann Eiffel. She was in a dire situation (no money, no food, hardly any clothes), but made a decision to do something about it by herself. By selling the furniture, she not only made enough money to deal with these dorm fees, but she has also cut ties with her useless father. She could have spent it all getting pampered at the spa, but she’s putting the money to a… well… better use. And she still has some pocket money left over. And she still has her job at the Fuse. Perhaps Bernice and Dez can show Tiffany the wonderful world of Thrift shops. And then there are all the amazing ways to enjoy Ramen noodles…
