I really can’t say that I care for Bets’ attitude about cooking for oneself. How does she feed herself? Does she sit back and let her Mom do everything? Is she living on her own, and she gets take-out, or fast food, or sits at tables in high-end restaurants (and that’s why she couldn’t afford Souffle Lingerie)? Not sure where this is going… maybe Les and Bets will learn something about cooking? Or will they exploit Gunther?
That dismissive attitude about leaning how to cook (boring) has gotta go. Everyone can and should learn the basics. One of these days, she’ll appreciate the lower costs, the better quality per dollar spent, and the control that she can have over her food when she prepares it herself. Not sure exactly what’s in tacos at Taco Bell or Jack in the Box? Make your own! Fed up with the way that photos of burgers in the ads always look better than what you actually get? Make your own and whip up a big-ass burger patty with no fillers!
So we have all the elements for a vegan introduction to Zoomers and late Millennials by the characters in the vegetable garden arc. So many in this forum seem to take great glee in saying that Bets and Les are stupid, and not only are they wrong, but the miss the story methinks. Time will tell. There is no romance between Les and Bets either, just friendly conversation as he has with Tiffany for example.
It’s concerning that neither Leslie or Bets considers giving it to Gunther. Has Gunther disappeared from the Luannaverse and hence forth Bets will be dating Leslie? And why did Leslie accept the box of vegetables if he neither knew what it was or considered it food?
Other mysteries of this arc…. how did TJ get into Tiffany’s house. Did she leave the door unlock when she went to Dez’s garden? She did not know that TJ had already left so she hadn’t waited at the house to let him in. Did she give him a key to the house? Did she tell him the code to disarm the security system that her father undoubtedly has in the house. Is she OK with TJ rummaging in the family silverware? How did Leslie get a carton of vegetables? Was it before or after TJ finished cooking? Persumably Leslie got the vegetables from TJ at the Fuse, why did TJ divert to the Fuse before goign to Tiffany’s house to cook?
And it’s nice to see that Bets is the stupid one instead of Luann. Makes for an equal opportunity slagging on Karen’s part.
Oh, I’m sure Momther probably taught Gunther how to cook a delicious vegetable casserole. He might be able to make an edible dish out of those things. Even if no one knows what they actually are. And it’s nice that Bets isn’t practically perfect in every way after all. I remember how freaked out people were when Toni said she didn’t cook a long time ago. (Unrelated, one guy even told me women couldn’t be called chefs, they had to be called cooks! Primitive!)
Either Irma will not like Bet because she doesn’t cook or she will take her under her wing and teach her the art of cooking. No potential daughter in law of hers doesn’t cook for her beloved Gunther. Bets, you better learn or expect Irma to come over with cooked food everyday.
After yesterday and today’s strips, I’m starting to wonder if it’s a slow intro to Les and Bets maybe finding a mutual liking to each other that is going to perhaps blossom and cause strife between he and Gunther.
I was really starting to like Bets. I’m now just starting to think she is completely using gunther for her own popularity. As he can do everything she is unwilling to do.
Cats have the power♡! Probably Gunther (or Irma) will use these vegetables. Meanwhile, Bets and Les appear to have more and more things/behaviors in common… OH NO!!!!
What’s all this about food and cooking??? Ever since Bernice made breakfast at the DeGroots, all we’ve seen is strips including food and cooking. Even earlier if you include J’Monstro!
When I grew up, it was a luxury to go to a restaurant. Everything was home cooked and we were grateful for what we had. My mom cooked. Years later she remarked she didn’t know where I got my love for cooking as she hated it. That answered a lot of questions about her cooking! :-o I raised two sons who liked to eat…a lot! The boys both fight over my cookbook collection and both cook. The cat sitting on the veggies is no more appetizing than the dog licking the dishes. Hope they are not going to waste all those farm fresh veggies. Please, where Gunther or Irma?
I like to eat delicious, healthy food, so I learned how to cook at an early age. Take out or prepared food often contain more salt and fat that I want.
I was one of the first boys to take Home Ec at my High School in 1965. Also took Typing. Back then it was College or the Military; I decided to get the Service done first. Those two classes served me well. Everyone else was scrubbing floors and I was typing their names on a duty list. Same thing with KP. I was stirring a pot while everyone else was scrubbing pots.
I hope Gunther knows. He should share domestic chores, if they were to marry… but a lack of skills and an expressed unwillingness to learn, disqualifies her in my opinion.
I’ve always been curious about why some posters here always talk about someone ‘coming to the rescue’ of another person. Now I see posters talking about Gunther or Irma ‘rescuing’ veggies. I’m not a long time reader, so I’m not sure why ‘coming to the rescue’ is a major theme here. Anyone know?
Back in high school, Food and Nutrition was not my best subject. Mrs. Gray tried so hard to teach me to cook.
But it wasn’t a total loss… I did master scrambled eggs. To this day, it’s the one dish I can cook with no problems whatsoever. And on rare occasion, I’ll boil some Ramen noodles.
I commend Greg for his aging of Punk! When we last saw Punk and the other kitties, it was not long after they were brought home, and they were drawn much smaller and kitten-like. Punk is definitely larger here, though not a full grown “Moe” sized cat yet. That’s good continuity.
Hunting and gathering used to be a basic survival skill. It no longer is. So was making your own clothes. So was farming. These survival skills are no longer necessary for the average person. It is obvious to me that it is possible for, depending where they live, for the average 21st century citizen to go their entire lives without HAVING to cook a single serving of food. So what? If you like to cook, there are plenty of outlets for your creativity. If you don’t, there are plenty of restaurants and microwave ovens. Use them and get back to what you like to do.

What you do, Leslie and Bets, is give the vegetables to Gunther and he’ll whip something up; he grew up knowing how to cook with his mother.

Don’t measure. Pour this box of veggies in a big pot of boiling water. The soup and stew a few minutes later isn’t bad.

Lessee here – everything they need to make a stew is in the box except for the spices and salt.
.
4 carrots, peeled and sliced thick
1 onion, coarsely diced
2 tomatoes
5 medium potatoes, cubed
4 stalks celery, cut into 1/2" pieces
2 quarts water
4 lb. to 5 lb. cat
