Just reading KL above fits just with what I was going to comment. To me this Valentine’s Day flashback arc is sad; the desperation of Luann’s romantic delusions in her romantic life, the emotional cluelessness of Gunther, the casual cruelty of Delta and Bernice on Luann’s embarrassing card and now it’s gets deeper with Gunther about to see that very card. Man it was cruel back then, even if there was a gag setup in panel 3. I know there is a lot of shade thrown in the current iteration of the strip and characters, including new ones, like Bet and Tara, blaming Karen for the change; If that is the. case, congratulations Karen. Lu still carries water in the strip for being so doofus and talking about shade, but at least it is not as cruel. And a lot more satisfying with the character and story development now as the characters become young adults although Luann still can’t catch a break. She gets criticized for not being in the strip while these new arcs are being developed and when she is she gets criticized for things like being allegedly doofus on helping a friend, Tara, in a fix, or putting up with Bern’s sarcasm and her romantic life is still in a mess. What a troubled road the character whose world is being described and life in that world is about has to travel, then and now.
When was the last time Bernice had the expression like she did in panel 3? Bernice usually has that “look down her nose” at you when she speaks with Luann. She is a lot like Delta, who despite being intelligent, often looked down at people. Too bad Luann did not just turn the question around yesterday by asking: “Hey Bernice did you get any Valentines this year?” (Answer, no, unless Gunnie is being nice) It would be interesting to see what Delta would have said if she was asked the same question, she probably would have attracted more interest than Bern but then again, maybe not….
Luann reminds me of a kid in high school that we hung out with, he was a liar, always doing something stupid, got us in trouble, created drama…..years later we were wondering why we ever hung out with him and it turns out nobody ever really liked him.
We see by this series of reruns that there’s been no character development at all in the last 20 years. Should I bother to keep up with this strip? I feel like Sisyphus sometimes: All I have to do is stop, but the gods won’t let me.
So many questions and complaints about the reruns! Who cares why they are doing this. Even cartoonists deserve a vacation or a sabbatical. After so many years of doing this its o.k. to take a break and recharge. I’m enjoying the flashback to 2001. Also enjoy Luann again strips. It’s good to be reminded about where the strip was and where it is now. BTW has Delta been written out? Can’t remember the last time I saw her. One thing I appreciate about this strip is that they continually add new and interesting characters.
Thank you, GE, for improving Gunther’s character design so much. I don’t know why, but I feel he used to look dumber than a box of hammers. Something about the mouth..
I’ve stayed quiet so far, but I have to say a couple of things now. First of all, thanks to the people who have for days patiently answered the shocked, enraged, and baffled questions of hundreds who obviously don’t read the comments before they ask questions. Second, commenters, could you at least read a FEW comments before you ask a general question about the comic and any bewildering changes? There’s a good chance it’s already been answered (in this case, MULTIPLE TIMES). Thank you. I sincerely hope that we return to “regular” time on Monday, not because I dislike the older strips, but because it’s so wearying to go through the comments.

Is Greg Evans not doing this cartoon any more? Artwork and dialogue is sub par compared to even last weeks submissions.

Wow, Luann’s face in the last panel! And I thought the front end/grille/bumper of some of the early 1960’s Dodges and Plymouths were ugly…
.
Looks like Gunther got there just in time! Now show your sweetie the card, Lulu.
