I thought yesterday’s talk about Rules for Dating was a Red Flag. Now there are three more (Phil’s mother, father and sister). Luann should leave post-haste.
Ok, but he asked her to go out. He should have clarified before they agreed to meet that he wanted to go Dutch. So his family dynamic is similar to Luann (BFF psychologist-to be)
Pay individually? Didn’t Phil invite Luann; and doesn’t that obligate him as a host to pay? I do find this dating etiquette perplexing. While kissing is never an obligation, and therefore clarifying that it certainly is not so on a first date is potentially stress relieving, doesn’t raising it as a consideration merely postpone the stress?
Phil asked her out. He should be a gentleman and pay for the date. I can’t imagine asking a woman out and not paying for it, unless when it comes time she insists on paying her own tab.
Also, he’s being far too analytical. He shouldn’t even bring up kisses at the outset. He should use his sensitivity about that issue when it’s time for them to part. He should be joking, and asking questions about her activities and interests. Above all, he should quit listening to the “experts” in his family.
Luann was the nervous one at first, but now it seems that Phil is lacking self-confidence and is very uncertain of himself with a woman. Luann may have to teach him how to dance!
To me it seems he’s throwing suggestions out there, not setting rules. Luann could certainly suggest something different and they could discuss. If it was me, I’d be appreciative.
Hey, it just occurred to me that Phil is even more of an analytical nerd than Bernice!
…. So maybe she’s the one he should be dating. They could analyze the world’s problems all evening long and never get around to anything romantic. If they married, they might spend the first five years hashing out the “rules”. Any thoughts of intimacy could wait until after all that.
“I won’t unwrap my little straw, I will not rub my manly jaw. I will always wear my little coat, while riding on my little goat. I will wade you through my muddy moat, we do not need a fancy boat. I do not have a frikkin’ clue, and now let’s go and sniff some glue!”
My husband and I were both so nervous on our first date I almost walked past him! He paid for coffee and I offered to pay. We didn’t kiss the first date. The second he paid one round of drinks and I paid another. Wasn’t gonna let him go without kissing him and we have been together ever since. I loved him from the start.
Spending a first date talking about dating doesn’t seem relaxing. Instead of focusing on the fact they’re on a date just talk about their interests, hobbies, fave ice cream flavor, anything else.
I think Luann is relaxing because she’s realized she isn’t the most nervous person on this date.
And, just my opinion, but regardless who asked whom out, on a first date I’d always be prepared to pay my own way if need be. And as a way to keep from being trapped in an uncomfortable situation, I’d also be prepared to call a friend or a cab if a safe exit was needed.
We know so little about Phil. At least we know he has a job and now, apparently, he has a stable family. Maybe the last girl he dated was only after his money and not him for who he really was. He might be testing Luann.
First date ground rules: I’m paying today because I’m old fashioned, and that’s what I do. A kiss isn’t expected, and if I invite you up to see my etchings, it’s because I have etchings I think you’d enjoy seeing.
Phily was betrayed by one little detail. How cute! Luann seems to be having a great time with him. I wonder if we’ll ever meet his family. The sister already seems like a character who could help Luann find her path much better than the willing, but inexperienced, Tiffany and Bets.
Clearly this arc continues next week. Any bets on what flavors these two order? I’ll say vanilla for Mr. Vanilla. And Rocky Road for Wild ‘n’ Crazy Luann.
What’s the opposite of a red flag? So far this guy is a keeper! The fact people are pairing him with Luann’s best friend further strengthens this. Luann seems to be amused with how nervous he is. This is going well.

It seems that Phil’s more nervous than Luann. She seems pretty relaxed.
Commediacrit about 9 hours ago
Oh, so Phil CAN banter! And he was raised in an articulate family.
I like the way he thinks, but will Luann be able to keep up with him?

This guy needs to date Tara first. Then he would be able to forget about family guidelines.

Eww, flavour of the day is Greg.
Robin Harwood about 8 hours ago
Poor Phil! With that family, I’m amazed that he can function at all! And yet he’s the only one of the family doing a real job. The rest are frauds.

Wow.
Phil setting “boundaries” like belligerent nations establish demilitarized zones.
I hope Lu is not expecting any sort of what passes for “romance.”
But there ARE two pieces of Good news:
1) Phil appears to come from a stable family. A welcome change of pace from the dysfunctional families many the other characters come from.
And
2) Ad it stands, Lu is doing better in the dating department than Tiffany currently is. But then again, what else is new? ;-)

Sometimes stress is a good thing.

Good stress is a good thing because it helps motivate you to live a full life. Bad stress makes it very hard to lose weight…

Luann would really like to peel the cover off of his straw. : )

No kiss today, obviously, but there is the mention of one. Give it a real world week.

Never in my life have i had a date that I didn’t pay for. If yoy can’t afford to pay for the first date you can’t afford to ask her out.

Dating is bad enough but looking back at those days could cause a type of post traumatic stress disorder.
