Uh…. more drums? He and Viper just brought in a complete kit in there! One more picece will require an official license, signed by Neil Peart, himself …. – It’s probably going to end badly , since they’re bringing in a karaoke machine. Isn’t it illegal to operate one, without the proper vocal training? – Er…I actually can’t see anything wrong with bringing fire, though. And I’m sure they could have enough to share with the kids in the other rooms, not going, so that they can enjoy some, too

Dez looks nonplussed by Bernice’s transformation. I think I guessed right. The brownies don’t have anything in them that Betty Crocker wouldn’t use, but if Bernice thinks she’s stoned, that works just as well.

I am not sure I like the way this arc is going. Dez got her high, now is directing the other protaganists in the party which Bernice was trying to control or prevent. Whether we think Berb is being a prude or not, or is the right academic year to be an RA, getting someone high without their knowledge or consent is decidedly not a good thing. Maybe I am jumping to too many conclusions. We will see.

These brownies are purely Betty Crocker. Probably store-bought, at that. Bernice is having a placebo effect, because she thinks the brownies contained cannabis. It gives her a convenient excuse for being unable to exert control over the situation.

Remember that Bernice commented that the brownies were likely against the rules, before she started eating them. She thinks they can make her stoned, so now she doesn’t have to act like an authority figure.

As a long-time stoner, it really offends me that people used to perpetuate the myth that hippies, or counter-culture people in general, thought it was cute to dose someone without their knowledge or consent. I have no doubt that some of you know someone, or think you know someone it happened to, but it was not common, and it was considered monstrously uncool everywhere I knew of (mainly LA and Berkeley).

I sincerely hope Greg is going to let us see that there was really nothing in those brownies, but that Bernice hit on them as an excuse not to be responsible.

I really don’t want to think Dez would be so cruel, evil and insensitive. It would be horribly out of character for the Dez we’ve been shown so far.

With Bernice passing out laced brownies (we think), a party getting way out of control and the new RA/Bernice being disrespected by the other students, I just don’t find reading Luann fun any more. I know Greg wanted to bring them all into the next phase of their lives by showing them in adult situations but that’s not why I read the comics. I read them for a giggle and I’m not getting many any more from Luann.

    oh, if Dez was half the responsible liberal counter culture humanitarian trip master she was originally set up to be, she would have cautioned Bernice to “only try half a brownie, dear”, and not “have another one”;

Or just lines of various sorts. .Note the Greg comics with Derek above. Is a slant on the line inherently repulsive? .Do some eyes seem actually to slant? Are such eyes morecommon in East Asia? Is it perceived there as ugly, or as an insult? .In comics, could it be no more offensive than showing an African-American like Delta with a darker skin than Luann?Or T.J. as a southern Italian with a tanner complexion?.No No No, say the politically correct. !! Being politically correct means (for some) that all human characteristics would best be folded into a bland whitey stereotype , since anything else must be by definition anomalous — and therefore might be seen by sensitive souls as weird, insulting, hurtful, or even repulsive.

Evans has handled racial issues deftly before. .I consider the following to be pure genius.

Now, however, he is burdened by Miss Evans as a writer, and she has produced choppy and confusing story-lines from time to time. This R.A. / drug tale could be one. We may never find out how it ends, may never see any party. May never see any classmates but those in today’s strip.

So Dez probably assumed that Bernice had already eaten brownies plus before, since she grabbed one and started to eat it without asking any questions.

I remain worried about what will happen to Bernice in this context. Not whether she will end up without the RA job, but whether her unknowing encounter with THC will send her over some kind of edge…

There is nothing wrong with it at all.We do not need to enforce conformity. Moreover, the comics often exaggerate features, so thatis to be expected — to a degree. I am an Asian American Luann Fan. Sun’s design doesn’t offend me in the least. I don’t know a lot about comic art, but it seems to me that Mr. Evans uses several different styles for his characters. Toni and Bernice and Tiffany seem to have very different styles and I confess I found that a bit jarring initially, as a comparison in them can lead to comments like one I read here about dear Tiff having ‘Frog Eyes and a Duck Mouth’. I feel Sun is drawn in the Bernice style. Dots and dashes provide variation in character looks, it’s a short hand, a caricature, not a photographic rendering. I have never sensed any racism in Mr. Evans, and so believe that Sun’s design is a cartoonist’s thing, not a bigoted statement at all.

As a reader, I must say it looks like Bernice is stoned to me. It’s the way it reads for me.

I’m not sure what book you’re referring to :/ Could you please clarify? Would it be Stuff White People Like"? Those are a couple of very funny books.

“Whether the brownies are “laced” or not, to me they are providing an outlet for Bernice to “let go” a little. Even if she’s just convinced in her own mind. And kudos for Greg to bring up the subject , whether real or imagined. Some cartoonists wouldn’t have even done that.”

That is an excellent comment :) I actually think today’s strip is pretty funny.

So, if Bernice gets in trouble for all this is Dez going to step up and take responsability for what happened, or is she going to let Bernice take the long hard fall?

Boy at last count 183 comments, now 184 and my second. Everything from unethical stoning, or stonage(ing) (the practice of making someone else stoned with or without their knowledge), depiction of East Asians (personally I think the Asian girl is cute, and I am a light-complexioned African-American who is proudly Black, but would probably have more Caucasian genes in his background, so there) the parameters of being a RA, whether Bern is hallucinating, or having a placebo affect, and any number of other threads of thought. Greg I don’t think you could top this unless Toni and Brad get married, AND adopt Shannon, or Luann runs away with Quill, which she won’t. Such an example of how damn addictive your strip can become. -:)

I don’t remember acting like that when I ate brownies back in college."

we didn’t have “brownies” when I was in college. Made up for that later. When you think there’s no effect and have another brownie, they all kick in like gangbusters. And they did.

Everything was funny. And hungry. And horny.-I was in dental school in SF back in the 60s, and the suger-munchied-out hippies would come to the clinic with teeth in the most miserable condition, if they were there at all.

A note on the REAL hippies (pre-1967): It was the worst form of unethicalness to slip a drug to someone unbeknownst. Later on, with the introduction of the harder drugs (and more sinister people) into the Haight, that all changed. Now, a woman in a bar has to take her drink with her when she uses the loo, for fear some dude will slip her a ‘roofie’ while she’s gone. Yes, times have changed, haven’t they.

Don’t squeeze your eyes into slits and then tilt them upwards at a steep angle, and make sure that your open-mouthed grin doesn’t fill up the bottom 40% of your face.

In 1954 Toklas published The Alice B. Toklas Cookbook, a book that mixes reminiscences and recipes. The most famous recipe, contributed by her friend Brion Gysin, is for Haschich Fudge, a mixture of fruit, nuts, spices, and “canibus sativa” [sic] or marijuana. Her name was later lent to the range of cannabis concoctions called Alice B. Toklas brownies. The cookbook has been translated into numerous languages.

Maybe Toni will wake up, realize that her “engagement” to Brad was just a nightmare, and pour herself a stiff drink about how scary it was.

“I can. Remember that nightclub where the band Great White played? And there’s also the Cocoanut Grove fire of the 1940s.”^Yeah, I know… I was being sarcastic. I agree, too- that “Great White” one, for one, was crazy, with the low ceiling, the mismanaged pyro, and the thought that nothing bad could happen from jumping up and down, like that (at time) ! – Plus there have been some other disasters started over the smallest fire (from cigarettes burning a little bit too long [though, if you ask me, a cigarette burning, at all , is wrong], to falling asleep with burning things and the occasional “I thought it was all under control!” unattended fire, and the “walking out” on something left burning, unnoticed" [sort of like what happened to Chiachi leaving ’Arnold’s’, on “Happy Days”])..
